Highlands School is a School for Specific Purpose (SSP) located in Renwick, near Mittagong in the Southern Highlands. The school has a current enrolment capacity of 42 students (11 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students) from schools in Wollondilly and Goulburn Networks in Years 5-10 that exhibit challenging behaviours, emotional disturbance and/or autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and the effects of Adverse Childhood Experience's (ACE's). The school is in a semi rural setting and is well resourced with a Science Laboratory, working Industrial kitchen and Café, Basketball Court, School Hall, Playing Field, Music Room, Art Room and STEM Room. On site we also have an Aboriginal Men's and Women’s Groups that operate after school and maintain links with local sports teams.
Highlands School provides - access to the full curriculum, at stage appropriate level, with adjustments depending upon the student’s literacy, numeracy and social needs; teachers who will collaborate with the student, their family and the census school to develop individual integration and transition plans, learning plans and support plans; structure and support to reach set behaviour targets before reintegration into census school; pathways to other education or employment settings as appropriate.
Highlands School operates six classes currently, with each class consisting of seven students, a SLSO and a generalist teacher. Classes are divided in to stages, with the emphasis on meeting NESA requirements with the goal of our students to achieve the RoSA if they complete Year 10 with us.
Approval to teach special education and/or experience in teaching primary and secondary students with Behaviour Difficulties, Autism and Emotional Disturbance including Trauma.
A willingness to teach students in Music, Drama, Dance and participate/organise sport lessons.
An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
