To deliver electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) requirements to Defence users in Australia and overseas. The successful candidate will be required to work with a diverse range of stakeholders to enable the Australian Defence Force and other Defence users to access the EMS. This requires obtaining the necessary spectrum clearances, usually in the form of licences from the Australian Communications and Media Authority, and contributing to, and implementing plans, that maximise Defence's ability to exploit the EMS for Defence purposes.
The successful candidate will also be required to liaise with Defence representatives and other government representatives from other nations in order to enable Defence to operate in foreign environments. The successful candidate will also require creativity and enthusiasm in order to deliver spectrum requirements when required to respond to urgent short notice requests.
The additional payment is a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP) which enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the rate of salary otherwise payable under the Enterprise Agreement (EA) to some or all of the jobs within a critical occupation(s) or discipline within a workplace.
Applicants engaged into a BDCP position must consider the following. BDCPs provide remuneration in addition to the Defence Enterprise Agreement (EA). This arrangement is subject to meeting eligibility criteria and is subject to annual review. Should your performance fall beyond requirements or the eligibility criteria not be met, your eligibility for the BDCP may be reviewed and ceased.
It may also be ceased should you change positions or the requirement for the BDCP is no longer necessary, as determined by Defence. Should the BDCP be ceased you will be advised and your BDCP additional payment will cease.
About our Team
The Defence Spectrum Office (DSO) is the principal authority for managing the Australian Defence Organisation's use of the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS), achieved through equipment certification, EMS management, via planning and coordination, radiocommunications licensing, EMS access authorisation and coordination of satellite systems. We provide strategic advice relating to current & future spectrum use as well as day-to-day authorisation & management of Defence’s spectrum requirements domestically and overseas. We also authorise EMS access required in support of foreign government and military vessels, aircraft or land forces either visiting or operating in Australia.
The successful applicant will work in a team of fellow spectrum engineers and specialists that holistically manage the use of the radiofrequency spectrum by Defence at a regulatory and strategic level and providing the necessary support for operational and tactical users.

The ideal candidate will be able to work cooperatively across the Defence Organisation to enhance Defence capability and achieve results for all Defence users of the electromagnetic spectrum. The ideal candidate will be required to be proactive in contributing to the development of plans for improved use of the electromagnetic spectrum and achieve the necessary consultation to implement these plans, and drive the change required to benefit Defence.
