About this opportunity

Joining our Tropical Marine Water Quality & Impacts team who are working to deliver quality monitoring and biogeochemistry research on the coastal ocean, your role will support the team and assist with the day-to-day activities in eDNA (PC2) and water quality laboratory. The important work you will undertake with the team will progress research in the field of eDNA in general, and detection and control of Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (COTS) and monitoring of water quality. A hands-on technical role, you can expect to undertake activities including:

  • Preparation, analysis and curation data for a number of samples including eDNA – DNA extraction, standard PCR, digital PCR, metabarcoding – extractions, library preparations, initial analysis,
  • Carrying out routine laboratory and instrument maintenance to ensure optimal performance,
  • Preparing water quality samples for storage and processing as instructed,
  • Identifying anomalies or issues in sample processing, data entry or the laboratory environment,
  • Conducting routine water quality sample analysis for nutrient, sediment, optical and physical parameters,
  • Assisting with COTS husbandry and spawning experiments, and
  • Supporting with field activities as needed within the team.

 About you

You will be proficient and experienced at working in a laboratory environment, and able to apply a high level of diligence, attention to detail and reliability in processing samples. This experience will be supported by your tertiary qualifications in Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry or similar area, and your capability working with genetic samples including eDNA sampling processes, and water quality sampling techniques and analysis.

You will be able to work in a fast-paced environment and the ability to problem solve when needed and have well- developed written and verbal communication skills, and a collaborative style of working. Your experience in undertaking field work and experience in eDNA data analysis will be critical to your success in this role. An ADAS dive qualification, Coxswain ticket and willingness to partake in vessel-based field work would be highly desirable.

  1. Non-Australian Citizens must hold an appropriate Visa with working entitlements that allows paid employment with AIMS for the term of the appointment, depending on the relevant Department of Home Affairs current policies. AIMS may be able to consider sponsorship for international applicants for this role, however, please note that visa processing times can impact the ability for AIMS to consider sponsorship for vacancies. AIMS must meet the requirements of the Department of Home Affairs immigration policies and processes, including the necessity to test the local labour market for suitable applicants. This includes international talent pool members who are Australian visa holders who have relevant working rights.
  2. It is a requirement of this role that you are and remain fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Please note the sighting of proof of vaccination will be required as a pre commencement requirement.
