We have a generous holiday package; plus the opportunity to buy more, great pension schemes and a number of health and wellbeing initiatives to support you.Closing Date: 30 June 2024The RoleThe School of Arts and Cultures is looking for a professional and enthusiastic Technician to lead on and provide comprehensive technical support to students and colleagues within Journalism and across the Media, Culture, Heritage (MCH) subject area. The post-holder will have responsibility for providing inductions and training on specialist equipment and facilities, including health and safety responsibility.You will have a detailed knowledge of video and audio production as outlined in the essential requirements below, as well as knowledge of contemporary media and journalism practices, including video production and podcasts.Informal enquiries may be made to our Technical Manager, James Davoll, at .Key Accountabilities

  • Responsible for leading on the provision of technical support to the Media and Journalism programmes within MCH including induction and training of academic and technical colleagues and students on specialist equipment and facilities, including cameras, sound recorders, editing hardware and software and health and safety information
  • Responsible for the operational management of Media and Journalism facilities including all aspects of health and safety and liaising with the School Safety Officer
  • Advise on, and manage, the technical requirements (provision, equipment, space) for MCH modules to both support teaching and learning and inform policy and procedure
  • Oversee and curate the e-learning platform that supports practical induction sessions
  • Contribute to the management of MCH and School Technicians, managing performance and setting tasks
  • Manage the purchasing of MCH equipment and the associated budget, as well as the ongoing servicing, maintenance and audit of over 2000 assets
  • Member of relevant subject, School and University committees and Steering Groups as required
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of technical advances and pedagogical approaches to regularly review processes to be in line with industry best practice and to improve efficiency of workflow
  • Provide technical expertise in support of research for colleagues and PGR students
  • Contribute to support across the School as required including technical support for performances and events which may include some out of hours work
The PersonKnowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Detailed knowledge of media and journalism technology and current practice in media and journalism
  • Detailed knowledge of digital media production including recording and editing sound, stills and video
  • Advanced knowledge in Adobe CC package, including Premiere Pro, Audition, Photoshop
  • Knowledge of web content management systems, such as WordPress
  • Knowledge of teaching and learning methods and techniques
  • Good communication skills; must be able to explain complex processes and information to students and staff both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team, planning own workload to fit in with customer demand across the School
  • Good organisational and planning skills
  • Experience of supporting work in a commercial or educational creative subject or experience of working in a busy Higher/Further Education or similar environment
Desirable
  • Knowledge of graphic design and infographics creation/ platforms
  • Relevant experience in health and safety including any qualifications
  • Knowledge of use and servicing of Audio Visual equipment
  • Fellowship to AdvanceHE (at any level)

Qualifications
  • Good honours degree, or equivalent, in a relevant subject
  • A postgraduate qualification or equivalent level of experience in a relevant field
  • Professional Registration in relevant field
