About ACU:

Australian Catholic University (ACU) is an inclusive community which welcomes students and staff of all beliefs. ACU has over 2,500 staff supporting more than 34,000 students across eight campuses - Ballarat, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, North Sydney, Strathfield, Blacktown and Rome.

As valued members of our community, all staff members are expected to have an understanding of ACU's mission and values and to demonstrate an active contribution to them.

About the National School Of Education:

The National School of Education is the largest provider of initial teacher education in Australia with a strong reputation for its high quality, work-ready graduates. Adding to its traditional strengths in early childhood, primary and secondary initial teacher education, the National School of Education's disciplines reflect key strengths in the areas of early childhood, mathematics and literacy education, the arts, science and technology, educational studies, teacher professional practice, assessment, educational leadership, Indigenous education, and wellbeing and inclusive education. These disciplines are evidenced both in the undergraduate programs and through its extensive postgraduate coursework programs with strong enrolments. The School also has a large number of students undertaking higher degree study through its PhD and EdD programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Support and mentor ACU pre-service teachers completing placements in educational settings (including Primary, Secondary, Early Childhood and Inclusive educational settings).
  • Liaise closely with the centre/school-based supervising teacher and professional experience coordinator regarding the pre-service teacher's performance and professional development in alignment with the requirements of that particular unit.
  • Ensure all relevant centre/school personnel have received University documentation.
  • Familiarise the supervising teacher with the aims and requirements of the block professional experience.
  • Understand the requirements for the professional experience and what a pre-service teacher should be able to demonstrate during an early professional experience and the final placement.
  • Observe and assess pre-service teacher and provide written feedback about teaching aligned to the Graduate Teaching Standards to support the pre-service teacher's development and reporting on pre-service teacher's progress during, and at the conclusion of the placement.
  • Discuss with the pre-service teacher strategies for implementing feedback in a lesson and ensure that the supervising teacher provides written feedback.
  • Liaise with relevant ACU professional and academic staff in relation to professional experience matters.
  • Respond to concerns from the pre-service teacher or staff in the placement setting in the first instance and provide additional support and observations where a pre-service teacher's performance is of concern.
  • Initiate the Professional Experience At-Risk (PEAR) process should it be required. If a pre-service teacher's progress is deemed to be 'At Risk' of receiving an unsatisfactory grade, the tertiary supervisor must notify the Professional Experience Office. The Professional Experience Office will then notify the relevant ACU academics or nominated Lecturer-in-Charge of the professional experience unit of study. Once an 'At Risk' assessment has been made the PEAR Procedure must be followed.
  • Attend relevant ACU briefings and professional development.

You will need to have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Education/Teaching and appropriate combination of professional training and relevant work experience. Masters degrees are desirable.
  • Minimum of 5 years recent teaching experience. Executive or management level experience is desirable.
  • Understanding of current curriculum and research priorities in education.
  • Ability to travel to educational settings across your metropolitan area and potentially beyond.
  • Evidence of the ability to work with children and/or vulnerable adults, and contribute to and protect their safety and wellbeing. The successful applicant of this position will be required to hold a valid working with children clearance for the State or Territory in which the position is located.
  • Applicants should demonstrate awareness of the University's Mission and Catholic ethos and demonstrate an understanding of how this role serves the Mission
  • Applicants should demonstrate commitment to cultural diversity and ethical practice principles and demonstrate knowledge of equal employment opportunity and workplace health and safety, appropriate to the level of the appointment

The University pursues an excellence agenda and offers an environment where staff are welcomed and safe, and valued through development, participation and involvement.
