We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Veterinary Nurse to join our team at the Friends of the Koala Hospital. This position offers a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of koala conservation efforts while providing exceptional medical care and support to injured, sick, and orphaned koalas. You will work closely with veterinarians and volunteers to ensure the well-being and rehabilitation of koalas admitted to the hospital.
We are open to considering both part-time and full-time engagements. Work hours are set from 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday.
About usFriends of the Koala has over 35 years of experience working on critical, on-the-ground activities to protect koalas individually and as a species. We have a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by koalas in our region. We respond to rescue calls 24/7, participate in groundbreaking research, provide veterinary treatment in our Koala Hospital, educate and engage the community, and protect and restore prime koala habitat.
With over 250 volunteers and 7 staff, we do what it takes to ensure the survival of koalas in the Northern Rivers.
Tasks and responsibilities- Patient admission and triage
- Inpatient monitoring / checks
- Patient medications and treatments
- Anaesthesia and surgery
- Pathology testing (collection / processing of samples and recording/reporting results)
- Cleaning and maintenance
- Communication, education and community outreach
- Minimum Cert IV Veterinary Nursing
- At least two years' experience working in a veterinary hospital
- Knowledge of koala biology, behaviour, and common health issues is desirable
- Physical fitness and excellent animal handling skills a must, previous experience with wildlife is preferable
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Compassion, patience, and a genuine interest in wildlife conservation
