Job description

Are you passionate about ensuring the safety and wellbeing of staff and residents in the aged care sector? Do you have a proven track record in developing and implementing effective Health and Safety programs? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you!

We are seeking a dedicated Workplace Health and Safety Manager to join the Sundale team based on the Sunshine Coast. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in creating a culture of safety excellence and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and industry standards.

With a focus on prevention rather than cure, we strive to mitigate risk and focus on early intervention to optimise the wellbeing of our team members.

This position is responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of comprehensive Health and Safety programs, policies, and procedures. The WHS Manager collaborates with the senior management, and frontline staff to promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement.

Key accountabilities

  • Provide strategic advice and direction in the development, implementation and monitoring of WHS management systems, policies, procedures and guidelines in accordance with legislative requirements, industry standards and best practice
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and audits to identify potential hazards, assess risks, and implement control measure to mitigate risks effectively
  • Provide the business with operational guidance, support and technical expertise to minimise safety incidents across the organisation
  • Investigate incidents, accidents and near misses, and develop strategies to prevent recurrence, including the implementation of corrective and preventive actions
  • Analyse and report on safety and worker’s compensation data to identify risks and implement practices to control or eliminate
  • Drive the implementation of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategic Plan
  • Maintain accurate records of incidents, risk assessments, training activities, and compliance documentation, ensuring all records are up-to-date and easily accessible
  • Monitor and analyse safety and workers compensation performance metrics, preparing reports and presentations to the Executive Leadership Team and the Sundale Board
  • Provide leadership that encourages and creates a continuous improvement safety culture and implement contemporary and innovative safety practices
  • Develop and maintain close working relationships with key stakeholders
  • In partnership with the Learning and Development Team, develop and implement core training programs
  • Undertake regular workplace inspections
  • Chair the Workplace Health and Safety Committee, facilitating regular meetings to discuss safety issues, review performance indicators and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Build and maintain the effectiveness of the Health and Safety Representatives role
  • Liaise and work collaboratively with WorkCover Queensland to ensure the best outcome for injured workers.

Key knowledge and experience

  • Proven experience in a similar role within the aged care sector or healthcare industry, with a deep understanding of the unique Health and Safety challenges in this environment
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and standards governing Workplace Health and Safety in Australia, including the Aged Care Quality Standards
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to conduct risk assessments, incident investigations, and trend analysis to drive continuous improvement
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organisation
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, including the capacity to motivate and empower others to prioritise safety and adhere to policies and procedures
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with Health and Safety management systems (e.g., incident reporting software, compliance tracking tools)

Qualifications / Experience

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Health and Safety or extensive experience managing Workplace Health and Safety and the worker’s compensation functions
  • Experience in aged care would be desirable
  • Performs responsibilities in a manner that reflects and responds to a focus on ethical conduct, maintains the strictest of confidentiality, engagement and continuous improvement
