About the role
Mater Private Hospital Townsville is currently searching for an Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander Liaison Officer to join our team on a permanent part time basis.
The role is essential in facilitating effective communication between Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their families/carers and health care professionals, to ensure health care is provided in a culturally safe, sensitive and appropriate manner to enable patients to complete their health care journey and improve their health outcomes.
Salary range: $42.05 - $46.32 per hour plus superannuation and salary packaging
What you'll be doing
Within this role you will provide practical assistance, support and advocacy for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their families/carers whilst patients of Mater Private Hospital Townsville.
Key accountabilities include:
- Assess the needs of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families/carers, and provide relevant culturally appropriate intervention i.e. problem solving, practical assistance and referral as appropriate.
- Provide education, cultural liaison, consultancy, and brokerage to staff about the cultural needs of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families/carers, advise and assist staff to implement appropriate communication strategies and the importance of establishing rapport with patients to improve staff understanding of culturally specific issues as they relate to the provision of culturally safe health care to Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Follow defined service quality standards, occupational health and work policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
- Provide cultural support within a multi-disciplinary team by providing culturally appropriate advice and support to team members about the needs of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Identify opportunities for service improvements to meet the changing needs of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and make recommendations to the Executive Officer.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge and liaise with relevant health workers, community agencies, support networks and accommodation services.
- Participate in the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Service activities such as in-service programmes, business plan activities, staff meetings, statistical collection/collation and record keeping.
This role is designated as Indigenous Identified. Under s.25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld), it is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be an Australia Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.
To allow the panel to confirm that you are eligible to be considered for this Indigenous Identified role, the panel may either:
- accept your written assertion that you are of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent; or
- obtain from you, as part of your formal application, documentary evidence attesting to your Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.
- This position requires the incumbent to operate a class C motor vehicle and an appropriate licence endorsement to operate this type of vehicle is required. Proof of this endorsement must be provided before commencement of duty.
- This position will be required to travel between our Townsville hospitals to work.
- Experience working with Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people/communities in a hospital liaison role or similar and the broader health and social services sector, both government/non-government. (Desirable)
- Completion of qualifications in Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care. (Desirable)
