The vision for nursing and midwifery at The Sutherland Hospital is to: Build a united team that provides compassionate care to our community through transformational, supportive and holistic nursing and midwifery.What you'll be doing:The Aboriginal Health Worker provides cultural support and care coordination to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people referred to Child & Family Health services by working in partnership with the clinical care providers.The Aboriginal Health Worker (AHW) works in partnership with New Directions Midwives provides cultural support and care coordination to improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander babies, women and families. The AHW will be an important member of the multidisciplinary team based at Sutherland Hospital and extending to St George Hospital. The AHW will provide a link between members of the Aboriginal Community and the service to promote early attendance at antenatal care and promote maternal and infant health and wellbeing. The AHW is an advocate for the women and their families, empowering them and enabling their participation in their families care, identifying obstacles to ongoing care, and finding solutions that will enhance care outcomes.
The AHW will assist the midwives to provide antenatal, postnatal care and early parenting and health information. They will also act to support continuity of care for Aboriginal families and women with complicated and at risk pregnancy including teenage mothers.Where you'll be working:The Community Maternity Services at Sutherland Hospital provides Maternity care as an outpatient model with an emphasis on continuity of care. The Community Maternity Services incorporates Midwifery Group Practice (MGP), Maternity Antenatal / Postnatal Service (MAPS), the Antenatal Clinics, Midwifery in the home postnatally and the New Directions team, which provides antenatal and postnatal care to Indigenous mothers and babies. The Community Maternity Services strives to provide safe, woman centred care by working collaboratively with the women and families who engage with the service.Our Hospital and Community:The Sutherland Hospital is a 375-bed, major metropolitan hospital and an associated teaching hospital of the University of NSW, which is part of the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District and is located in Caringbah, a southern suburb of Sydney. Established in 1958, The Sutherland Hospital campus offers a comprehensive range of inpatient and community services to around 226,000 residents of the Sutherland Shire, colloquially known as ‘The Shire’A $62.9 million redevelopment has delivered a new and expanded emergency department, 60 new acute inpatient beds, and storage space for theatres to improve efficiencies. Current refurbishment works to provide an expanded medical imaging service are in progress.
The hospital campus is close to some of Sydney’s great beaches, restaurants, bars and cafes at Cronulla and is close to the beautiful Royal National Park. Gymea is another lively suburb with many restaurants and cafes.   • Holds or aspires to hold the Aboriginal Maternal Health Workers course or a minimum Certificate III in Aboriginal Primary Health Care
  • Knowledge and understanding of significant issues in Indigenous health and its provision.
  • Demonstrated skills in health education, care coordination and experience working as an Aboriginal Health Worker
  • Demonstrated skills in health education, care coordination and experience working as an Aboriginal Health Worker
  • Understanding of early childhood & maternal health issues
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • Current NSW Drivers Licence Class
