What you'll be doing

Trainee positions were designed to: 

  • Build the Aboriginal MHDA workforce in Far West LHD to support a culturally appropriate MHDA Service for Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal People 
  • Build skills and knowledge through on the job training supported by a tertiary degree.

The Far West Local Health District is one of 15 LHDs under NSW Health, providing high quality public health services to the communities in far west NSW.

  • Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent (N.B. An applicant's race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under S.14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW, proof required from a registered Incorporated body is compulsory).
  • Passion and commitment to working with people living with mental ill health / drug & alcohol issues, both Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal.
  • Understanding of the social and emotional issues experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and commitment to improving these.
  • Willingness and commitment to learning and self-development, including completion of the Bachelor of Health Science (Mental Health) course at Charles Sturt University over three consecutive years.
  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence in the workplace (self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, social skills).
  • Demonstrated effective communication, written and verbal, computer skills and understanding partnership work.
