Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across three campuses in the north-east of Melbourne and state-wide. We have a highly engaged, diverse and collaborative workforce that is unified by our purpose, which is to help people live healthy and fulfilled lives.
About the Division of Surgery, Anaesthesia and Procedural Medicine
The Surgery, Anaesthesia and Procedural Medicine Division (SAPM) employs over 1,500 staff and is responsible for the provision of approximately 50,000 elective, planned and emergency procedures per year delivered to the community serviced by Austin Health. This includes; elective surgery, emergency surgeries and procedure base care across?11 operating theatres?and 4 endoscopy suites?at the Austin site (AOS) and 8 operating theatres?and 2 endoscopy suites?at The Surgery Centre (TSC).
The Osteoarthritis Hip and Knee Service (OAHKS) forms part of SAPM and led by Advanced Scope Physiotherapists working alongside Orthopaedic Surgeons, Nursing, Allied Health and Administration staff. This position is primarily located on level 8 of the Harold Stokes Building, Austin Campus, and Clinic 4 East Green, Centaur Building, Austin Repatriation Campus.
About the role
This position is designed to support the Advanced Scope Physiotherapists in the Osteo Arthritis Hip and Knee Service (OAHKS) clinic.
The focus of OAHKS is to help people manage their osteoarthritis (OA) by developing and coordinating a management plan that suits their needs. This includes optimising communication between referring GPs, allied health services, and hospital staff who facilitate waiting lists for specialist clinics appointments and elective orthopaedic surgery. OA is a degenerative condition occurring when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of the bone wears down over time damaging the joint and causing symptoms such as pain, disability, joint stiffness and swelling. These symptoms can ameliorated by weight loss, exercise and medications, but can often require surgical replacement of the hip or knee joint with a prosthesis.
At Austin Health, all patients referred to Orthopaedic Surgery are first seen by our advanced scope physiotherapists in OAHKS. Sometimes patients who are referred to OAHKS are elderly and frail with significant co-morbidities which impact on their ability to manage their OA symptoms and affects their suitability for surgical intervention. We are currently piloting an OAHKS-Geriatric-Endo-Pathway to enable thorough assessment and support of this cohort of patients to optimise them prior to being seen by an Orthopaedic Surgeon.
