This position is being offered on a five (5) year contractual basis. Options for renewal exist, subject to satisfactory performance.
This position is available on either a full time or part time basis (minimum 0.8 FTE will be considered).
The Office
The State Solicitor's Office (the Office) is the Western Australian Government’s principal legal adviser. The Office enables government action, manages the State’s legal risk, and supports the First Law Officer with authoritative advice on key legal issues. Our work delivers demonstrably better government decisions, strengthens the rule of law, and leads to greater community trust in the public sector. We are a centre of legal excellence committed to the highest standards of service and professionalism.
Legal Services provided by us include the provision of legal advice; the preparation of legal documents; the conduct of litigation; and representation as counsel in courts and tribunals. The Office provides these services in a cost effective and timely way, consistent with maintaining legal excellence and integrity in the Government's legal dealings.
Legal Sections within the Office include Civil Litigation; Public & General Litigation; State Counsel; Advise, Policy & Public Law; Native Title & State Lands and Commercial.
The Role
We are seeking to appoint a senior commercial lawyer who is an accomplished and successful member of the profession. Whilst very high ethical standards, personal integrity and honesty are assumed in the role, the successful applicant will also possess outstanding skills necessary to develop and maintain effective relationships with Government Ministers, Chief Executive Officers, Executive Directors and other public servants at all levels.
Significant intellectual and conceptual ability is essential to enable success in situations with high levels of complexity and conflicting priorities.

What is on offer?
- A term of five years based on a fixed term contract.
- You are entitled to the same terms and conditions as contained in the Public Service Award 1992 and the Public Sector CSA Agreement 2022, excluding annual leave loading.

A current permanent WA Public Sector employee will elect to forego permanency to take up this position and will not be entitled to a right of return under section 58 of the Public Sector Management Act 1994.
