The Position
As the Senior Media and Crisis Communications Advisor, you will provide expert advice and support in media, Crisis Communications, and public affairs. You will develop and execute comprehensive strategies, create content, and use data to inform your approach.
Your role includes advising senior leadership and government offices, collaborating with the Media, Communications and Engagement Branch, and working from the National Situation Room if needed. You will maintain strong connections with key stakeholders, including government officials and media, requiring excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Participation in the on-call roster, short-notice recalls, and interstate travel are required.
Your key responsibilities include:
The Senior Media and Crisis Communication Advisor will, under limited direction:
- Provide media and communications advice and services to support the achievement of the Agency's strategic and operational objectives.
- Develop communications and media products for use across a range of mediums (broadcast, print, multimedia), including strategies, media releases, media responses, talking points and speeches, on behalf of the Agency, Minister and Prime Minister
- Manage media enquiries on behalf of the Agency, including acting as a liaison with the media to understand their information and interview requests and provide timely responses.
- Engage in issues management, helping to deliver sensitive projects that impact on strategic or operational outcomes for the Agency
- Work with Agency, cross-government and cross-jurisdictional stakeholders to deliver sensitive projects and new measures.
- Participate in the Media, Communications and Engagement Branch on-call roster (restriction allowance and overtime/FLEX apply), supporting Senior Agency leadership and the Minister.
- When needed, work from the Australia Government's National Situation Room in Canberra
- Build and sustain effective relationships with team members and actively participate in team work and group activities
- Assist with all other media or communications tasks as required
Successful candidate attributes:
Our ideal candidates will have experience as a journalist or in government media and communications roles, with skills in media, Crisis Communications, and public affairs. Key capabilities include strategic messaging and understanding different media needs (online, broadcast, print). Candidates must produce high-standard, audience-appropriate content and work effectively in fast-paced and crisis environments.
A degree or diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related discipline is highly desirable.
Daily responsibilities include:
- Leading projects and supporting timely delivery of high-quality materials
- Project managing strategies and delivering impactful outcomes within tight deadlines
- Writing and editing high-level content
- Collaborating with team members and senior colleagues
- Providing communications support during crises
- Conducting media monitoring and reporting, and escalating emerging issues to the Media Director.
- On call roster where weekend work may be required

Current Baseline Security Clearance is preferred.
