Aquatic Ecologist – Base salary range $78,500 – $85,600 + Super

Ecological Service Professionals (ESP) is a niche aquatic ecology and environmental science practice based in Wynnum, Brisbane. We are seeking to appoint an Ecologist to support our growing team and our strong pipeline of work. Key responsibilities of the role will include completing and leading teams in the field, completing laboratory work, data analysis and reporting. This is a permanent, full-time position, with opportunities for advancement although a part-time appointment will be considered for the right candidate.

ESP was founded in 2014. Since that time, we have grown to be a supplier of choice for several large clients across a range of industry sectors including Government, water infrastructure, legal (expert witness), urban and tourism development, and mining and gas. We work in marine, estuarine and freshwater environments throughout Queensland, with some interstate and international projects. Our diverse portfolio of current projects includes long-term monitoring programs, specialist approvals support for small and large projects, partnerships with community projects, and habitat restoration programs. About you:

Mandatory criteria – you must have:

  • Australian Citizenship or a right to work in Australia.
  • A University degree in ecology, environmental science or equivalent.
  • A strong scientific background demonstrated by at least 2 years of post-graduate professional experience in aquatic ecology (marine, estuarine and/or freshwater).
  • A current driver’s licence.
  • An ability to work in the field, including for up to two weeks at a time and in remote areas if required.
  • Demonstrated experience in data analysis, including past experience analysing complex data sets using a variety of statistical techniques.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, particularly experience in communicating scientific information effectively in written technical reports.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering aquatic ecology field surveys, including planning and the ability to be innovative and flexible when dealing with challenges.
  • An enquiring mind, desire to challenge the status quo and think outside of the box to deliver sustainable scientific solutions.
  • An affinity with our core values and a willingness to adopt them in your day to day work.
  • Ability to maintain ESP's high standards for delivery of Projects.

Highly desirable criteria:

  • Post-graduate and / or vocational qualifications (e.g. Honours, AUSRIVAS accreditation or Certified Environmental Practitioner).
  • At least 2 years of experience in a consulting environment or demonstrated project delivery across diverse environmental sectors.
  • Strong customer focus and an ability to communicate scientific information to non-technical audiences
  • Relevant desired field qualifications such as 4WD experience / training, recreational marine driver’s licence / coxswains, first aid, Standard 11, Industry Safety Induction (ISI), relevant occupational medicals.
  • Understanding of State and Commonwealth legislation as it applies to aquatic ecology matters, including protecting environmental values and fisheries resources as well as impact assessments and offsets.
