About the Role
ASD 6 Legal Officer
In an increasingly complex and changing national security environment, an ASD6 Legal Officer (LO) performs complex and sensitive legal work to support projects that have strategic and operational significance.
You will have experience in one or more of the following subject areas:
- Cyber security, commercial or contract law.
- International, military, operational or national security law.
- Administrative, employment law or dispute resolution.
Reporting to, and supporting, a Deputy General Counsel, an ASD6 LO works independently and is accountable for the delivery of legal services. You will exercise both initiative and judgement in the interpretation of law and policy and in the application of practices and procedures. You will provide detailed legal advice in relation to complex work and contribute to strategic planning, program and project management and policy development. You are eager to learn and develop a broad range of legal skills to best support ASD’s mission.
As an ASD6 LO you may mentor and supervise junior Legal Officers and will be accountable for managing competing priorities and workflows and building team capability and culture.
An ASD6 LO has a considerable level of client and stakeholder engagement in relation to complex issues. You will identify, anticipate and respond to stakeholders’ needs and expectations to achieve outcomes. You will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.
ASD 5 Legal Officer
An ASD5 Legal Officer (LO) performs moderately complex legal work under the supervision and support of senior legal staff.
An ASD5 LO is accountable for organising their workflow and making independent decisions relating to their area of responsibility. You will interpret and provide legal advice based on legislation, policy and procedures and will undertake specialist research and analysis and provide procedural and administrative support to achieve results. You have and maintain a well-developed understanding of, and compliance with, relevant legislative frameworks and government decision-making requirements. You are eager to learn and develop a broad range of legal skills to best support ASD’s mission.
The ASD5 LO coordinates and contributes to the work of a team in accordance with a work plan and provides advice and assistance on completion of tasks to team members. They review and develop the quality of work undertaken by others and identifying opportunities for on‑the-job training.
An ASD5 LO engages and communicates with stakeholders to identify, respond and provide advice on issues to achieve outcomes. They are accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.
About the Team
General Counsel Branch within the Legal, Compliance and Strategy Division is a specialist in-house legal practice that supports ASD’s mission by advising on legal
issues and the management of legal risk. It is a dynamic and collegiate branch with a strong focus on delivering quality, timely legal advice and developing staff in a positive team environment. We draw upon the professional talent and diverse experience of our people to pursue excellence in support of ASD’s mission.
General Counsel Branch has Legal Officers in locations around Australia and comprises teams who advise on a range of legal practice areas including employment law, commercial law, national security and intelligence law, international law, legislation reform and legal policy. Legal Officers will be exposed to a wide variety of interesting and complex legal matters as you complete rotations through our legal teams. This is to ensure you have the skills and breadth of experience required to advise in our complex and fast paced practice.
