Job description

Agency Purpose
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is an independent statutory authority established by the Australian Government to maintain an impartial and independent electoral system for eligible voters through active electoral roll management, efficient delivery of polling services, and targeted education and public awareness programs.
The AEC’s values and commitments
The AEC values and commitments are an essential component of our operating environment and frame how AEC staff work. The AEC's focus is on electoral integrity through the values of quality, agility and professionalism.
The Team
You will join a network of Assistant Team Leaders across the country that ensures the proper conduct of the election and upholds the Electoral Integrity Framework. You will work across a diverse and dispersed network, working closely with our State Office, National Office and the other states and territories.
The APS 5 Assistant Team Leader supports the Team Leader in the leadership and management of staff within their designated office and delivering a public facing service as required. The Assistant Team Leader may also likely undertake the legislative responsibilities of the Divisional Returning Officer for a federal electoral division and will work to ensure that division delivers an election result with transparency and integrity.
At the AEC you will develop strong connections with colleagues and supportive networks, as we all work to deliver an impartial and independent electoral system with high integrity.
The Opportunity
As an Assistant Team Leader, you will be responsible for planning and delivering major logistical events, setting expectations for the broader team, and preparing complex correspondence, reports and reviews.
This role’s primary functions include managing and supporting all aspects of large-scale projects, managing a small team, which expands in size considerably during an event, and collaborating and communicating with key stakeholders.
During a federal event, you will act as an APS6 Divisional Returning Officer for one of Victoria’s 39 electoral divisions. In this role, the Divisional Returning Officer’s primary responsibility is to deliver the election in their prescribed electorate.
To excel you’ll have:

  • An agile attitude that is flexible, positive, innovative, motivated, and resilient.
  • Demonstrated experience to meet immutable deadlines in a high performing environment.
  • A willingness to support the team, remain positive and respond to pressure in a calm manner, while committing energy and drive to see that goals are achieved.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate and negotiate with team members, business areas and external stakeholders at all levels of seniority.
  • Experience in successfully setting priorities and contributing to the delivery of medium to large sized projects and programs.
Eligibility
  • AEC employees must be Australian citizens.
  • Any person who is, and seen to be active in political affairs, and intends to publicly carry on this activity, may compromise the strict neutrality of the AEC and cannot be considered.
  • Applicants are required to consent to, undergo, obtain and maintain a character clearance.
  • Applicants are required to consent to, undergo, obtain and maintain the security clearance required for this role.
