About the Position
The North Australia and rangelands Fire Information (NAFI) service (www.firenorth.org.au) is a not-for-profit web-based business based at Charles Darwin University (CDU). We aim to help people achieve effective fire management for healthy country in Australia’s savannas and rangelands by producing regularly updated high-quality satellite-based map data on fire activity, fire histories and tools across the Australian savannas and rangelands via a public facing website. We also produce a range of more specialised high-resolution regional/property scale burnt area mapping (BAM) to support fire operations as a fee-for-service. 

We are seeking to obtain casual staff to assist with high-resolution BAM supporting fire management operations for several properties over the 2024 fire season. Hours will vary dependent on the amount burnt area required to map each week and available cloud-free data. Days of work will be restricted to business days and will vary according to the satellite overpasses and available cloud-free data.

About You
To be successful, you will require:

  • Bachelor of Science in Natural Resource Management or similar with subsequent relevant experience or extensive experience and management expertise in the technical field or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Knowledge of image processing techniques and their application to burnt area mapping.
  • Competent in the use of GIS software and programs including ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, SAGA, Google Earth Engine, Google Earth Pro and python scripts. 
  • Have a sound understanding of Spatial Data management.
  • Experience working with remote/rural communities in Northern Australia.
  • Demonstrated capacity to take direction and work independently and innovatively towards achieving an analytical product.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of academic and administrative policies and the interrelationships between a range of policies and activities.
  • Sound knowledge of the NAFI web service data and tools.
  • Experience in working with fire managers in northern/rangelands Australia.
