The St John NT team currently have a permanent Child Safety Officer (CSO) role available within its Volunteer Event Health Services team.
This is a diverse and rewarding role where you will put children first and support their safety and rights. Reporting to the Director of Volunteers, you will work closely with the entire St John NT staff and volunteer groups to ensure children and young people’s safety across all services we deliver throughout the Northern Territory.
What does being a Child Safety Officer mean?
As a Child Safety Officer, you will be responsible for delivering statutory child protection and safeguarding services in accordance with legislation and the National Safeguarding principles. Your diverse role can involve working with children to understand their rights, working with employees and volunteers to understand their responsibilities and developing policy and quality assurance processes.
Duties include:
- Work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team, to provide legislative child safeguaring services
- Build professional relationships with children, parent, guardians, colleagues, stakeholders, and service providers
- Demonstrate commitment to maintaining cultural capability, engaging in self-directed learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and contributing to a culturally safe and inclusive workplace
- Maintain policies, statutory responsibilities, and internal governance documentation to ensure ongoing compliance and review
- Use evidence-based practices and actively participate in continuous learning, training, and professional development to stay updated on contemporary practices

What you Need to be a CSO:
- Works in or has previously worked, in the field of Child Safety, child protection, education, social work, psychology or similar.
- Has a thorough understanding of Child Safety protocols and legislation.
- Has experience in developing, comprehending and advising on complex policy
- Able to communicate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders
- Experience in managing projects and meeting deadlines.
- Ability to work to multiple priorities at once.
- Experience working with volunteers.
- Some interstate travel and out of office hours work may be required.
- A northern Territory Working with Children's Clearance
This role involves relationship building and maintenance, across your team and the CSSC, as well as with parents, children, and guardians. As such, you will have excellent relationship-building skills and a high-level of empathy, while still being aware of and following professional boundaries.
