The Opportunity
The Media and Communications team has an exciting full time opportunity for an enthusiastic, experienced and suitably qualified Communications Advisor. Reporting to the Coordinator Media and Communications, this role ensures information regarding Council and its activities is disseminated and promoted across the Maribyrnong community, while supporting the overall objectives of the Customer Engagement department.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform an editorial role, including researching and writing articles for Maribyrnong Messenger;
- Prepare weekly media releases and actively pursue PR and media opportunities across Council's programs and activities;
- Actively monitor, post and respond to messages on Council's social media accounts;
- Maintain editorial control of Council's website content management system ensuring all information conforms to Council Website Guidelines, providing support to website authors and page owners;
- Develop and manage communications plans for Council events and projects;
- Liaise with external organisations, businesses and community groups in relation to Council's organisational image requirements;
About You
To be considered for this role, you will have the following:
- Tertiary qualifications in communications, public relations, marketing or journalism in addition to several years' experience working in the field of specialisation;
- Ability to write speeches and content for key stakeholders including the Mayor, Councillors and Executive Management Team, based on accurate information and messaging appropriate for the context;
- Demonstrable experience dealing with the media and journalists, with the ability to respond to media queries, prepare media releases accurately and within the timeframes required;
- Previous experience producing and proofreading publications (e.g. newsletters) and managing print processes;
- Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, content management systems for Web Sites, desktop publishing, image scanning and digital cameras.
Our ideal candidate will have experience partnering with internal clients, will be able to coordinate and advise on communication plans for projects, have highly developed written and oral communication skills and will be able to skillfully manage conflicting priorities.
