Community Engagement Officer

About the opportunity
Menzies is a globally recognized health and medical research institute in Australia, known for its outstanding research. Its goal is to conduct medical research of international significance that enhances the health, longevity, and quality of life for all Tasmanians. The research strategy at Menzies encompasses a comprehensive approach from laboratory to bedside and focuses on disease prevention. This approach aims to enhance patient care and community health outcomes by translating knowledge into clinical practice and policy measures, and by commercializing research findings. Tasmania, an island state with a population exceeding 500,000, has a distinct health system that allows for strong collaboration with the University and government health agencies.
As our successful candidate, you will coordinate and manage Menzies’ Community Engagement and events program that aims to communicate our research programs and their impact; and communicate opportunities to develop a deeper relationship with Menzies. This includes involvement in our research as a study participant, through consumer and community involvement, volunteering and philanthropic support.
You will work closely with several key staff ensuring a strategic and coordinated approach to our Community Engagement activities, including with the Institute Director, Business Manager, Consumer and Community Involvement Coordinator, Communications Manager and Senior Philanthropy Manager.
There will be some after hours and weekend work, and intrastate travel will be required.
What you’ll do:
- Establish, coordinate and support a Community Engagement working group at Menzies.
- Establish clear internal and external pathways for continued engagement with Menzies opportunities.
- Coordinate the preparation and delivery of content for Community Engagement activities.
- Provide coordination and administration support to arrange and deliver public events and Community Engagement activities.
- Develop a thorough understanding of the Institute’s work and priorities to enable informed public presentations and to assist with decision making about the focus of activities.
- Build and maintain networks and develop positive relationships with university staff and students, community groups and the general public, always representing the Institute in a positive way.
What we’re looking for:
- A degree level qualification in a relevant area or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Demonstrated experience planning, promoting and coordinating events and/or Community Engagement activities.
- Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, including public speaking.
- Proven organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise tasks and manage conflicting demands.
- A team-oriented approach to achieving all tasks.
- Strong information technology skills, including the ability to draft presentations, maintain data records, and communicate through a variety of electronic channels, with a particular emphasis on attention to detail.
- Driver’s licence.
Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at HEO 5 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $99,698 comprising base salary within the range of $76,302 to $85,212 plus 17% superannuation.
