The Southern Aboriginal Corporation, celebrates 40 years of operation this year as it delivers cultural and effective business and resource delivery activities for the Noongar people of the Great Southern, through services and programs that improve and achieve Noongar needs and aspirations, in cooperation with other community and business organisations. We have a Community Support Officer position in our Bunbury Office.
The Role will be based in our Bunbury office with travel towns throughout the South West Region.
The Community Support Officer (CSO) will work in the areas of family and child protection and children in care and is responsible for:
Engaging, building and maintaining relationships with families and their children and communities whilst acknowledging the existing and inherent strengths that already exist;
Engaging and working alongside families to strengthen their capacity to provide care and safety to their members in ways that are:
- Sustainable,
- Will build resilience in children, families and the community, and
- Ultimately increase social wellbeing.
Assisting identified families and their children with relevant agencies and community resources to ensure appropriate responses are initiated.
The CSO is required to provide monthly management reports on outcomes achieved to the FVPLS Manager/Regional Manager
The CSO will attend meetings of the FVPLS staff as required.
Community Support
- Provide support for survivors of family violence including providing appropriate referrals, and legal information;
- Assist families to access relevant agencies and community resources;
- Provide ongoing support, commitment and assistance to children and young people in care;
- Engage with children and young people to promote and ensure their safety, wellbeing and development;
- Assist children and young people to access relevant agencies and community resources;
Crisis Work
- Provide advocacy, practical support, information as appropriate for clients in immediate crisis and for adult family members of clients who have recently been assaulted;
- Coordinate the involvement of appropriate medical service staff and police at the time of crisis as requested by the client;
- Accompany clients to medical, legal, police and court appointments as appropriate and as requested by clients;
- Provide appropriate referral to community and crisis services;
- provide information and assistance as appropriate to client’s family, friends and supporters;
Community Education and Wellness
- Deliver weekly arts and crafts workshops to promote inclusivity and well-ness;
- Help the solicitors to organise community legal education sessions; and
- Facilitate community engagement events.
Administration
- Assist in the promotion of the service throughout the wider community;
- Maintain client records, statistical and data requirements to approved standards;
- Participate in and where appropriate initiate the development of policies and procedures;
- Attend meetings as requested and appropriate;
- Perform all administrative requirements of the position within the identified timeframes; and
- Provide timely advice and reports as required.
