The role:
QLS has a part time and permanent opportunity for a Program Compliance Officer to join their team. Part of the Regulation team, the Legal Practitioners Admissions Board (the Board) team constitutes part of the Queensland Law Societies statutory obligations under section 662 of the Legal Profession Act to provide administrative support and legal services to the Board, including secretariat support. Part of the team’s role is to appear before the Court of Appeal on behalf of the Board in relation to applications for admission.
Reporting to the Solicitor and Secretary to the Board, the Content Assessor is responsible for:
- Reviewing the content of undergraduate, postgraduate and dual degree law programs to ensure compliance with the LACC’s Accreditation Standards for Australian Law Courses and the Priestley 11 areas of knowledge (Guideline 1 of 2019 issued under Rule 9AA(1)(a) of the Supreme Court (Admission) Rules 2004);
- Reviewing the content of postgraduate practical legal training courses to ensure compliance with the LACC’s Practical Legal Training Competency Standards for Entry Level Lawyers (Guideline 2 of 2019 issued under Rule 9AA(1)(b) of the Supreme Court (Admission) Rules 2004);
- Reviewing the content of ad hoc changes to individual courses offered as part of law and/or PLT programs offered by universities and PLT providers in Queensland in accordance with Guidelines 1 and 2 of 2019;
- Maintaining up to date schedule of course changes following approval by the Board and Chief Justice;
- Providing recommendations to the Board in relation to the approval of law and PLT
- Considering and advising the Board (and where relevant the LACC) on potential reviews and amendments of the Accreditation Standards, Priestley 11 requirements, and PLT Competency Standards conducted by the LACC from time to time;
- Reviewing applications and briefing overseas assessors in respect of overseas law graduate and/or practitioner’s academic and PLT assessments, and update and maintain statistical data for overseas graduate and/or practitioner’s academic and PLT assessment databases to ensure database information is accurate and up-to-date;
- Advising overseas graduates and practitioners regarding the requirements of applying for academic and/or PLT assessment, and processing applications to be provided to the Board’s overseas qualifications assessors;
- Reviewing applications and briefing the Board in respect of law and PLT graduate’s academic and PLT qualifications that are considered ‘stale’, and update and maintain statistical data for law and PLT graduate databases to ensure database information is accurate and up-to-date;
- Undertake, review and prepare any procedural aspects relevant to assessing or reviewing law/PLT programs, qualifications held by overseas graduates or legal practitioners, and stale qualifications held by law/PLT graduates.
Ideally you will have the following:
- Qualifications and/or experience in law and teaching within the tertiary academic sector of the legal profession.
- Experience in reviewing course content compliance within the tertiary industry and demonstrated ability to identify, research and summarise key issues.
- Knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of, the Legal Profession Act 2007 as it applies to the academic and PLT requirements for admissions.
- Exemplary customer service skills to respond efficiently to overseas law graduates and legal practitioners to provide an effective service.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to liaise with and maintain effective relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders, including senior staff of university law schools and PLT providers as well as overseas law graduate and practitioners.
Desired Skills and Experience:
- High level proof reading, time management and attention to detail skills.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task and work in an organised, systematic manner to perform high volumes of work and manage competing tasks and deadlines.
- A typing speed of at least 40wpm with high accuracy.
- Demonstrated competency in the use of modern office technology, including the MS Office Suite 2010 and record management applications.
