Job description

An exciting opportunity exists for a Consumer Peer Worker with a strong interest in mental health rehabilitation to join the Macquarie Hospital Peer work team. Our team has a strong commitment and focus on providing recovery-orientated, trauma informed & innovative approaches to supporting consumers in a mental health rehabilitation setting . As part of the Consumer Peer Worker team you will work collaboratively with consumers, carers, members of the multidisciplinary team and external stakeholders. We are looking for a candidate who will uphold the core values of NSW health inclusive of; Openness, Collaboration, Respect and Empowerment and be committed to the provision of Peer work services and activities across the wider hospital.

The position can be made either part time or full time, with a contract of up to 38 hours per week.

Where you'll be working

Macquarie Hospital
Macquarie Hospital is a declared, low-secure, 195 bed mental health facility with 14 beds for adult acute admissions and 181 beds in long term and short term rehabilitation services for consumers with schizophrenia, dual diagnosis and other enduring psychotic illnesses. It is located in North Ryde, 22km from the CBD of Sydney on approximately 42 hectares of parkland

What you'll be doing

MHDA Declaration

Each person's unique journey of recovery will be supported by mental health drug and alcohol services in a way that fosters hope, purpose and resilience.
MHDA Statement of Intention

The intention of the NSLHD MHDA is to provide recovery-oriented, trauma informed services that are guided by evidence based practices and collaboration.

The mental health peer workforce is centered on a recovery philosophy which requires that services demonstrate hope for consumers recovery, respect their experience, support their self-determination, identify and work toward collaborative goals or needs and promote their social inclusion.

Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, participating in team meetings and relevant clinical activities

e.g. care conferences, to contribute to assessment, care and discharge planning for consumers.

• Actively promote, encourage and support the participation of consumers in the planning, implementation and evaluation of mental health service delivery and in determining and influencing their own care.

• Assist with both formal and information consumer focused service evaluation activities. This includes the completion of the Your Experience of Service (YES survey) according to NSLHD, MHDA guidelines..

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  1. Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them.
  2. Personal experience of mental health services.
  3. Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work or willingness and commitment to obtain.
  4. Able and willing to share aspects of your personal treatment and recovery experience with others individually or in a group setting. This provides a role model for recovery, support and understanding for other consumers.
