The NRL competition is the premier Rugby League competition in the world and the core product of the NRL’s business. The Elite Competitions Department is tasked with administering and delivering the NRL’s elite men’s and women’s competitions and identifying ways to develop and grow the on-field product to maximise content for fans, broadcasters and commercial partners, appeal to new audiences and encourage more men and women to play or be involved in Rugby League at all levels of the game.
Based between Homebush and Everleigh, NSW, we currently have an exciting opportunity to join the NRL in the role of Data Analyst – Elite Officiating. Reporting to the General Manager Elite Officiating, the primary objective of this position is to provide critical data, insights and reporting on the performance of match officials across a round of NRL football. This information will be used to assist Referee Coaches in evaluating core competencies as part of weekly performance reviews and NRL management in assessing performance to help formulate weekly match officials’ appointments.
We are looking for a strong Data Analyst with excellent communication and organisational skills who has the flexibility to some work nights and weekends on game days. This proactive role will suit a team player, with a sports analytic background, who is willing to tackle a challenge head on with a positive, pragmatic approach. You will have high attention to detail and a strong understanding about Rugby League and NRL rules.
Duties in this role include:
- Analyse data related to referee performance, identify trends, patterns and opportunities for improvement.
- Create dashboards and visualisations to communicate perform metrics to internal stakeholders.
- Work closely with Data Analysts in the Football Department to integrate refereeing data into existing systems and platforms.
- Oversee the processes associated with bringing match footage and data coding into the referee performance analysis platform.
- Build statistical models to help explain and predict a referee’s performance.
- 1 – 2 years of demonstrated experience in analysing complex data sets and translate findings into actionable insights, within a sporting environment
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Data Analytics, statistics, Computer Science or a related field
- A strong understanding of rugby league and the NRL Rules
- A demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders (Match Officials, Referee Coaches and NRL Management)
- An ability to work autonomously.
- Experience with business analytics tools PowerBI, Tableau or other
- Excellent attention to detail and strong time management skills
- Flexibility to work weekends/after hours and reasonable overtime, as required
