The Opportunity
Far West Local Health District (FWLHD) is currently seeking a new Deputy Director of Nursing, Operations (DDON, Operations) to join their Broken Hill Health Service (BHHS) team. A senior leader within the service and supporting the Director of Nursing & Midwifery/General Manager (DONM/General Manager), the DDON, Operations will manage the day-to-day operations of the Nursing and Midwifery services.
A key focus of the role will be providing mentorship to the Nurse/Midwifery Unit Managers (NUMs/MUMs) and elevating capability across the service. This includes ensuring KPIs are being met and the health roster is in alignment with award requirements. The DDON, Operations will also be responsible for covering the DONM/General manager position as required.
With a staff cohort of 200 FTE across the Broken Hill Health Service, the DDON, Operations will play an integral role in driving service improvement and enhanced patient outcomes. Key stakeholders include the HR Business Partner, Finance Manager, the Clinical Governance Unit and the DDON, Strategy. Reporting to the Director of Nursing & Midwifery/General Manager, key responsibilities include:

  • Daily oversight of service delivery across the BHHS including the Emergency Department.
  • Providing leadership, mentoring and guidance to the Nurse/Midwifery Unit Managers as well as the Aboriginal workforce at the BHHS.
  • Oversight of the health roster, ensuring that rosters meet NSW award and legislative requirements.
  • Ensuring safety, quality and accreditation requirements are being met in collaboration with the Clinical Governance Unit.
  • Developing and implementing effective strategies for recruitment, retention, and professional development of staff in collaboration with People & Culture.
  • Driving positive cultural change through ongoing practice development aimed at contributing to improved patient outcomes.
  • Attending meetings as required as a representative of the DONM/General Manager.
About You
For this appointment, we’re seeking a Nurse Manager with a track record of providing clinical and operational leadership within a health service setting. In addition, you will have:
  • Current Nursing and/or Midwifery registration with AHPRA and at least five years postgraduate experience.
  • Relevant Postgraduate/Tertiary (Masters level) management qualifications or willingness to obtain within three years of commencement.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to motivate, influence and inspire staff to achieve service outcomes.
  • An ability to build, influence and negotiate with a range of stakeholders, working effectively as part of a senior management team.
  • An understanding of current and emerging trends within the nursing profession and an eagerness to contribute to the strategic planning of the service.
  • Evidenced success in efficient financial management.
  • Familiarity of NSW Health as it relates to this service is highly regarded.

How to Apply
  • Current Nursing and/or midwifery registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA and at least 5 years post graduate experience.
  • Appropriate qualifications in management from Postgraduate to Tertiary (Masters level) or willing to obtain within 3 years of commencement.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including conflict resolution, mediation and negotiation, and the ability to motivate, inspire and manage staff to achieve service and professional goals through recognised change management processes.
  • Proven ability to function effectively as part of a senior management team and to work successfully with other professionals and disciplines in the management of health care services.
  • Broad clinical experience and operational management expertise at a senior level within a health care environment, including strategic planning, the development, implementation & evaluation of organisational Strategic & Business Plans and Project Management.
  • Ability to identify, evaluate and incorporate emerging trends within the profession of nursing to contribute to strategic planning.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the role, function & funding of public hospital within the Australian and NSW Health Systems.
