ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The Environmental and Development Services team monitor public health related businesses who provide food and beauty services to the community, along with places of public access such as public swimming pools, making sure they are safe for the Cumberland Council residents. This team is also responsible for regulating compliance throughout the LGA ensuring that amenity and general safety is achieved, monitoring building compliance and fire safety. All of these services allow residents and visitors to the area to enjoy and feel safe within our Council area.

The Development Compliance Officer role will maintain and enforce development, safety and convenience standards as provided for in various statutes. This role will also facilitate outcomes that maximise value for all stakeholders and at the same time, protect the health, environment and amenity of the community. 

The successful applicant will require:

  • Qualifications in investigations and enforcement, statutory planning, building control or job related experience in Local Government
  • Current Class C driver’s licence
  • Current General Construction Induction Card (White Card)
  • Sound operational knowledge of legislation (Acts, Regulations and supporting guidelines/standards/codes), including, but not limited to
    • Local Government Act 1993
    • Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979
    • Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997
    • Swimming Pool Act
    • Building Code of Australia.
  • Sound operational experience in the management of investigations and enforcement action for a diverse range of areas, including but not limited to:
    • Planning Approvals and Consents
    • Building Control provisions
    • other breaches of Legislation under Local Government control.
  • Experience in preparing affidavits/statements complying with statutory rules that govern the collection, interpretation and presentation of evidence to and in a court of relevant jurisdiction
  • Experience in preparing letters, memos, reports and presentations on issues relevant to Development Compliance matters to a wide audience, including Team Leader, Manager and customers.

Position information: This is a permanent, full-time position, working a 70 hour fortnight, with access to Council's 9 day fortnight Accrued Day Off (ADO) arrangement.

This role is predominantly located at Council's Merrylands office, with occasional travel required across Council worksites, and may be required to work across any of Council’s work locations.

Salary information: The salary and conditions of employment are in accordance with the NSW Local Government (State) Award.

  • Grade 11 of the Cumberland Salary Structure with a salary range of $1,656.10 to $1,904.51 per week, plus 11% superannuation
  • The commencing salary will be negotiated, taking into consideration the successful applicant's qualifications, skills and experience related to the role

Council fully supports the aims and objectives of NSW Child Protection Legislation, and associated provisions, and will implement all necessary measures to ensure a safe and supportive environment, which endeavours to promote child protection practices.
