THE DEPARTMENT

The Hospital is a 300-bed acute and extended care facility which provides surgical, medical, paediatric, obstetrics and gynaecology, intensive care and phyc services as well as extended care in regional services.

It is the largest employer in the region, they work with purpose and pride and are committed to respecting and embracing diversity, inclusion and accessibility for their people and the community.  They have undergone an extensive $229 million transformation which comprises of five storey Inpatient Unit Building, expansion of the current theatre capacity, new Critical Care Unit, a state-of-the-art Dialysis Unit and an extension of the current Emergency Department.

THE POSITION

The Emergency Medicine Career Medical Officer are directly responsible to the attending Emergency Consultant for day-to-day patient management, and ultimately to the Chief Medical Officer.  They will provide the day-to-day clinical management of patients under the care and direction of the Consultant Staff of the Department to ensure a high quality of patient care. They will undertake administrative duties for the Department under the direction of the Consultant Staff to ensure that the Department is run efficiently.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES, ACTIVITIES AND DUTIES

  • In Consultation with the After Hours Hospital Manager (Nursing Supervisor), the Career Medical Officer will coordinate bed state of the hospital including the Critical Care Unit with respect to accepting referrals from outlying centres.
  • The CMO must carry the Admitting Officer phone when there is a FACEM unavailable
  • Conduct an ED ward round (screen or physical) twice during the shift.
  • When handing over patients in ED or taking over care of patients in ED, there must be a clear care plan outlined and the current treating doctor entered on the computer.
  • In case of surgical or medical life-threatening emergencies that need urgent intervention, the medical or surgical registrar on call must be informed.
  • Admitting Officers must attend and run Code White – Neonatal Arrest and Code Blue – Adult Arrest, until a more senior person is available.
  • At any point in time the CMO must be aware of what is happening in the Emergency Department.
  • Providing support to the Junior Medical Officers.
  • Performing an initial assessment including a history and examination of all emergency department patients at the time of presentation, initiating investigations and treatment and completing all appropriate documentation.
  • Admit and review patients to the hospital as indicated to support effective admission and discharge process.
  • Communicate with patients, family members, referring General Practitioners, other health care providers, community nurses and allied health staff regarding patient progress and care requirements.
  • Participate in the Hospital in the Home Program (HITH).
  • Make decisions with regards to appropriate inter hospital transfers.
  • Provide advice to ambulance services and General Practitioners in outlying hospitals regarding management of patients.
  • Provide assistance to the Director of Emergency in Emergency Risk Management.
  • Ensure that each patient has an appropriate fluid balance plan.
  • Participate in presentations at Ground Rounds, Journal Clubs and other educational activities as directed.
  • Completing discharge summaries in a timely manner.
  • Completion of entries in the medical record, including appropriate entries of his or her own assessments.
  • Planning and organising the structured and timely discharge of each patient and ensuring appropriate communication with treating doctors.
  • Ensure that medication orders are printed and that items are prescribed generically.
  • Responsible for helping to provide a safe working environment in line with Occupational Health and Safety guidelines, and for taking those steps necessary to ensure personal safety for self and others in the performance of duties.
  • Understand and fulfil the documentation requirements of relevant hospital Health documentation policies and procedures.
  • All relevant documentation for each patient must be completed before the end of each shift, as all data is transferred to the DHS and penalties will apply to the hospital for late or incomplete documentation.

  • To be familiar with the Australian Curriculum Framework for Junior Doctors, which is an educational template outlining the learning outcomes required of prevocational doctors, to be achieved through their clinical rotations, education programs and individual learning, in order to promote safe, quality health care.

TRAINING

  • Maintain and demonstrate regulated clinical skills and competencies by undertaking professional development and completing mandatory training as defined by the hospital
  • Undertake credentialing and review of scope of practice and work within these
  • Improve performance by seeking feedback, setting goals and participating in annual performance reviews
  • Support the development of others by acting as a resource to colleagues and participating in orientation and preceptoring of new employees and supervising students
  • Provision of appropriate supervision to less experienced clinical employees
  • Participate in committees and professional groups and disseminate relevant information to other health care professionals.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

  • Registration is maintained and working within scope of practice
  • Attendance and active participation at meetings as required
  • 100% compliance with core competencies and training requirements as outlined in the Hospitals Education Framework
  • Active participation in the Performance and Development review process
  • Participate in the Rotational performance enhancement process and complete all mandatory and role specific competencies blue printed on the H-Prime E Learning Program.
