The Role

The EL 1 Fleet Air Arm Human Factors Specialist will work within the Headquarters Fleet Air Arm (HQ-FAA) Safety Team responsible for managing implementation of both the Navy Safety Management System and the Defence Aviation Safety Management System across the Fleet Air Arm. The Fleet Air Arm Human Factors Specialist will be accountable under broad direction to undertake complex to very complex work health and safety specialist activities. 

These activities will predominantly concentrate on the desirable and undesirable contributions Human Factors make to Aviation incidents, both in the maintenance and operating environments. They will use their knowledge and experience of Human Factors to work within a framework of legislation, established principles, work practices and procedures in accordance with Defence's mission and business objectives. 

They will have experience and comprehensive knowledge of Human Factors in Aviation Operations and/or Aviation Maintenance and will be responsible for the development, implementation, compliance and review of policies within that discipline. Duties will include planning, leading and managing a range of human and physical resources and exercising the associated people and financial responsibilities to achieve business objectives. 

They will take the initiative for achieving outcomes and progressing work, reviewing team and project performance and will focus on identifying opportunities to conduct both proactive and reactive Human Factors Safety interventions. They will work with independence and set work tasks that align with the strategic objectives and communicate expected outcomes.

About our Team

The Headquarters Fleet Air Arm Safety Cell (FAASC) division is an integral and critical workforce within the Fleet Air Arm Headquarters. The FAASC is a small but very dynamic, resourceful and high performing team, delivering and ensuring that proactive safety initiatives, hazard tracking and aviation safety teams across Navy Aviation are supported to the expected level of professionalism required by the Commander Fleet Air Arm (COMFAA).

The team also provides specialist on-demand safety investigative resources as required. COMFAA is responsible to the Navy Fleet Commander (COMAUSFLT) for providing safe operationally ready and airworthy Navy Aviation forces through the command and management of the Navy Aviation Capability and the development, oversight and regulation of Airworthiness and Safety in accordance with Defence Aviation Safety Regulations (DASR).

The HQ-FAA provides the overarching management and leadership of these subordinate Squadrons/Units with their associated multiple of Ship’s Flights on-board Royal Australian Navy Ships. The Headquarters Fleet Air Arm is located in the Shoalhaven region of NSW and is an organisation with a long and tremendously proud history of delivering exceptional Navy Aviation capability to the Navy Fleet Command.

Our Ideal Candidate

A motivated and enthusiastic person to provide essential support in the area of Aviation Human Factors. Our ideal candidate will be required to develop, lead and implement proactive and reactive Human Factors related safety initiatives across the Fleet Air Arm and wider Fleet.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • High level interpersonal and verbal communication skills and the ability to liaise with a broad range of stakeholders, including contractors, APS and ADF members.
  • Highly developed written communication skills and a solid grasp of information technology systems with an eagerness to train and learn on Defence applications and systems.
  • An ability to learn rapidly and adapt quickly to changing complex situations and uncertainty, particularly in support of evolving safety investigations.
  • The ability to be comfortable and confident taking ownership of outcomes and leading tasks to completion and success.
  • Comfortable talking to large and small groups or at industry forums.
