About Us:The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) is an independent statutory authority governed by the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine Act 1985. It is part of the Justice portfolio of the Victorian Government.The VIFM Act creates a joint position of Director of the VIFM and Professor of the Department of Forensic Medicine (DFM) at Monash University. The Director/Professor is responsible for the strategic direction and activities of the DFM, which is housed at the VIFM and operates under the governance of the Monash University Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.
About the Role:This position sits within the Forensic Services Division which includes the departments of Forensic Pathology and Clinical Forensic Medicine. Clinical Forensic Medicine (CFM) includes, but is not limited to, the provision of healthcare in both an acute and ongoing basis, to victims of crime and those in police custody and prisons.This role will contribute to the provision of informed, impartial and competent forensic services to the Victoria Police, the Courts, the Office of Public Prosecutions, the Coroner, and the legal profession.The
Forensic Nurse (
Biological Specimens) supports the efficient and effective functioning of the division of Clinical Forensic Medicine, providing an informed, impartial and competent forensic service to the Victoria Police, the Courts and Office of Public Prosecutions, including the collection of biological and forensic specimens, preparing reports and statements.
Some of your duties will include:- Participating in the provision of after-hours (and occasionally during business hours (if available) forensic specimen collection services for Victoria Police including (but not necessarily limited to) the:
- Collection of blood and/or urine under the Road Safety Act 1986 (Section 56)
- Collection of biological and/or forensic specimens in accordance with relevant legislation and VIFM policy and procedure.
- Preparation of statements for forensic sampling cases and, if requested, for biological sampling cases.
- Attendance in court, as required.
- Complying with and actively participating in the Institute's quality programs including induction, ongoing in-service training and other relevant activities to ensure a reliable high quality forensic service.
- Providing prompt, timely and professional forensic medical services that take full regard of the needs of the justice system and issues of privacy, confidentiality and security as per VIFM policies
