The Medical Liaison Nurse applies medical knowledge and quality case management expertise to ensure streamlined coordination of the initial stages of the coronial death investigation, and works to critical and inflexible deadlines, whilst dealing with difficult and complex situations in a calm and responsive manner.
This position is part of a multidisciplinary team and the Medical Liaison Nurse participates in shiftwork on a seven day a week roster.
About the Business Unit
Coronial Admissions and Enquiries (CAE) provides a 24-hour service that is the first point of contact for coronial and forensic pathology processes, and coordinates the activities related to the initial phase of the Coroner's investigation into deaths. These activities principally concern an assessment of the body and the gathering of information, much of which is medical in nature.
About you
As our ideal candidate you will have:
Demonstrated post-graduate experience in an acute clinical setting.
Demonstrated ability to receive and interpret medical information, and experience in case management, with the ability to convert and communicate complex medical information into plain language to next of kin, families and other non-medical people.
Demonstrated excellent verbal, written communication and liaison skills, together with the ability to work in close consultation with grieving people and a wide range of disciplines, including law enforcement, legal and medical.
A track record in working in an environment that requires strict adherence to procedures and protocols including in relation to records management, confidentiality and privacy.
An appreciation of the internal service requirements of the position and a strong commitment to the needs of stakeholders encapsulated by the ability to work closely with and support the role of the Coroner and the Pathologist in the medico legal death investigation.
Qualifications/Registration
Current Nursing Registration (RN) with AHPRA.
Critical Care qualification is desirable.
Shift requirements
Ability to participate in shiftwork on a seven day a week roster.

The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) is an independent statutory authority governed by the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine Act 1985. It is part of the Justice portfolio of the Victorian Government.
VIFM is based at the Coronial Services Centre which also houses the Coroners Court of Victoria. This position sits within the Coronial Admissions and Enquiries team in Forensic Services.
