CAPTAIN - Marine Hospitality Vessel – M.V. CATALINA NOOSA
We are searching for an experienced, confident, and motivated Captain (min. Master 5/MED3) to join our developing marine team.
The Vessel.
M.V. Catalina is a 20m Marine Hospitality Vessel that operates exclusively on the sheltered waters of the Noosa River.
Fully licensed and surveyed to host 160 guests for weddings, corporate events, and our weekly public events and parties; Catalina is a unique, high-volume, high-energy environment.
All Catalina crew must be reliable, have excellent attention to detail, be customer service-focused, and be willing to work as part of an established team.
This is a FULL TIME role as Senior Master. Eligible candidates must be able to work weekends, and some public holidays.
The Role.
The Captain will be responsible for the efficient operation of the vessel whilst
maintaining excellence in safety, reliability, and customer service at all times.
This position requires working as the leader of a team, a high standard of
interpersonal and organizational skills, and effective written & verbal communication skills as well as proven safe ship handling and management skills.
The primary function of this role is the safe and efficient operation and navigation of the Company vessel. Thorough knowledge of all aspects of the vessel is essential to this role. This position is the sole engineer and in charge of general maintenance of the vessel. An in depth understanding of the NSCV and compliance requirements is a must.
Basic Duties:
- Ensure the vessel maintains compliance with all relevant laws and company policies while operating.
- Responsible for the implementation of the Safety Management System onboard in alignment with Company policies.
- Responsible for the reporting and recording of defects/breakdowns and other observations with implications for safe operation.
- Responsible for managing trades and service providers for maintenance of the vessel.
- Appraising and coordinating onboard training requirements of the crew as per the company's Safety Management System (SMS).
- Assigning tasks to Deckhands for the company SMS and companies Policies and Procedures.
- Ensuring compliance with the company SMS and ensuring this document is kept up to date.
- Reporting non-conformities, accidents involving personnel or plant, and hazardous situations to the Senior Master.
- Ensuring correct documentation is completed in accepted time frames.
- Ensuring that all ‘controlled’ documentation is up to date and issued as per company procedures.
- Conduct safety drills as per companies' Safety Management System.
- Complete preventative maintenance tasks in alignment with the company's PMS.
The Candidate:
The ideal candidate will have a strong desire to develop their skills in a rapidly growing marine operation. The Captain should be enthusiastic about mentoring and training the deckhands and other company personnel. The candidate is required to possess the following qualifications:
- Master 5 or higher
- MED 3 or higher
- Advanced First Aid and CPR
- Marine Radio Operator
The correct candidate will also demonstrate:
- Drug and alcohol policy compliance.
- Commitment to a long-term engagement.
- Previous experience driving vessels of similar size/nature.
- Strong interpersonal skills allowing fluid and professional interaction with guests and VIPs and can effectively communicate well with a crew across all departments.
- The ability to make good decisions at critical times, maintain an effective crew culture, and understand when to observe, and when to lead.
- The ability to communicate and work cohesively with department heads.
- History of leading with positivity and enthusiasm.
- An organized and consistent work ethic. Balanced, calm, and professional when busy and under stress.
- History of completing basic engineering duties and sound mechanical and vessel systems knowledge is a must.
- Basic computer skills and an understanding of cloud-based PMS systems are required.
Hospitality and or tourism experience will also be highly regarded.
