Job description

Position Overview

We are seeking an exceptional major sport events and venue management specialist to manage the venue planning and delivery of this world-class event and its associated fan engagement program.

As the GM Venues & Fan Engagement, you will be an integral member of a cohesive executive team and you will play a pivotal role in shaping the success of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Adelaide 2025 (Adelaide BVWC).

Your expertise and skills will be instrumental in building-out a delivery framework for the entire event precinct comprising of 7 competition and warm-up courts and associated infrastructure, liaising with agencies and managing venue agreements, overseeing the site operations team, and managing fan activation areas and programming to ensure execution of a world-class Championships.

This role reports to the CEO of the Adelaide BVWC under Volleyball Australia. The role requires an agile and hard-working sports events manager with a solution-focused mindset, strong interpersonal skills, a passion for putting their team first and an understanding of venue stakeholder relations in Adelaide.

Successful Applicant will be required to adhere to Volleyball Australia’s policies and procedures including the National Integrity Framework and associated integrity policies and Code of Conduct.

Organisations

Volleyball Australia (VA) is the peak body for the administration of the sport of Volleyball in Australia. VA’s Mission is to lead, partner and support the growth in participation, performance and profile of the sport in Australia. VA is the organisational body responsible for the delivery of the 2025 Beach Volleyball World Championships.

The FIVB is the global sports body governing volleyball as one of the most widely played sports in the world, and it represents 222 affiliated national federations world-wide.

Volleyball World is responsible for the hosting and delivery of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in conjunction with the local organiser, with the competition and rules of the game governed by the FIVB.

The next FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships will take place in exclusively in the heart of Adelaide, South Australia in November 2025. This event will showcase the pinnacle of Beach Volleyball talent featuring 192 women and men from around the globe, while also leaving a legacy for the sport of volleyball and the community.

The South Australian Government is a major partner of the Adelaide BVWC.

Job Responsibilities

Venue Planning & Delivery: Plan, monitor and manage the delivery of a clean and secure Adelaide BVWC event precinct comprising 7 competition and warm-up courts. This includes the sand requirements, venue infrastructure, audio visual, implementation of the ticketing system, waste management, cleaning and security.

Beach Festival Delivery: Plan, monitor and manage the delivery of the beach festival activation areas to provide an outstanding fan engagement experience reflecting the look and feel of the Championships. This includes entertainment, programming, hospitality, food and beverage and spectator services.

Road Closure Management: Facilitate road closure approvals and oversee the development and execution of the traffic management plan during the Championships.

Project & Risk Management: Prioritise, manage, and deliver key outcomes within tight deadlines, ensuring all aspects of event planning and execution run smoothly. Manage venue agreements and ensure compliance with all permits and approvals, oversee WHS and risk management.

Venue Ops Workforce Management: Recruit, train and monitor suitable personnel, suppliers and volunteers to perform the wide range of venue operations workforce roles.

Budget Management: Manage and monitor the venues and fan engagement budget and provide regular and timely updates to the CEO, identify opportunities for cost savings and efficiencies.

Stakeholder Relations: Ensure positive interactions and collaboration with agencies and stakeholders at all levels, to ensure delivery of a safe and successful event.

Team Collaboration: Work closely with the CEO and team members (particularly the GM Event Delivery & Sport Operations), contractors and volunteers and actively demonstrate a team-first attitude and behaviours to ensure the Championship’s successful delivery.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

• Proven track record in major sports event management in a similar position.

• High level experience in successfully managing sports venue operational delivery.

• High level experience in budget management.

• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.

• Experience in road closure planning and management.

• Experience in fan engagement or spectator services.

• Experience in working with local and state government in event delivery.

Desirable

• Experience in working in a similar position in Adelaide is strongly desirable.

• Qualifications in event and / or project management or a similar field.

• A background in the sport of Beach Volleyball is advantageous but not essential.

Knowledge & Skills

• Excellent stakeholder relationship management.

• Ability to work under pressure, prioritise tasks and meet critical deadlines whilst managing multiple projects simultaneously.

• Exceptional time management and organisational skills.

• Strong ability to work as part of a team.

• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

• Must have experience in working with children.

• Must be able to demonstrate an understanding of appropriate behaviours when engaging with Children.

Personal Attributes

• Ability to show initiative with a demonstrated commitment to the Championships with the ability to work independently and inter-dependently as a manager.

• Ability to be adaptable and flexible and make changes at short notice when things don’t go to plan.

• Ability to be resilient and push through difficult situations, keep calm under stress and process problem solving skills in a calm thoughtful way.

Work Conditions

The Adelaide-based position will commence from late April 2024.

Flexible work hours and conditions can be negotiated, including part-time work throughout 2024. The Championship delivery phase will require extensive after hours and weekend work, particularly throughout October and November 2025.
