The Position Summary
In October 2019, a new purpose-built Trauma and Orthopaedics ward at Alfred Health was launched. This is a 40-bed ward that has a dedicated surgical procedure zone, active therapy zones and spaces for families and carers. The redeveloped ward implements a contemporary Allied Health workforce model, which has partnerships with the Transport Accident Commission (TAC). The Allied Health workforce on this ward delivers early, intensive intervention across physical, functional and cognitive domains with attention to the achievement of patient-directed goals. The expanded multidisciplinary model will be delivered 7 days a week and is aimed at supporting improved recovery outcomes for Trauma and Orthopaedic patients. The Allied Health team includes clinicians from Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Orthotics and Prosthetics, Speech Pathology, Social Work, Nutrition and Psychology (including Neuropsychology) and will be supported by Allied Health Assistants. The Allied Health team works closely with the Nursing and Medical teams to provide a comprehensive and timely service to patients.
We have two exciting opportunities for Grade 2 Occupational Therapists to join the Occupational Therapy team at The Alfred in a permanent capacity.
The Grade 2 Occupational Therapist will carry a combined caseload of complex trauma, orthopaedics and neurological conditions including traumatic brain injuries. This role will be responsible for Occupational Therapy service delivery focusing on early rehabilitation, return to occupational performance, and complex discharge planning. You will work closely and collaboratively with the broader Allied Health team, including the Grade 4 Allied Health Team Leaders. You will provide early and intensive evidence-based intervention, which is shown to have positive outcomes in reducing the length of hospital stay resulting, in patients returning home sooner and continuation of rehabilitation in their own environment. An additional clinical component will involve the implementation of a comprehensive assessment of orthopaedic patients attending the elective surgery pre-admission clinic, and planning for their admission. You will work alongside the multi-disciplinary team to optimise post-operative recovery, support discharge through the application of evidence-based intervention and contribute to service development in the Occupational Therapy department. The successful applicants will be supported with opportunities to supervise Grade 1 clinicians and students; engage in quality improvement projects to improve service delivery; and ensure that evidence-based interventions are delivered.
Aligned with this model of care is the requirement of one-weekend shift per week and the opportunity to gain leadership experience across the weekend service. This is inclusive of ADO accrual and an additional week of annual leave above EBA, which can be used flexibly on some weekend shifts in consideration of service demands.
