Job DescriptionThe AFR is seeking a part-timeGraphic Designer to join our newsroom based in Sydney. You will be working with a team of multi-disciplinary Graphic Designers and artists to produce infographics and artwork for digital and print.
You’ll collaborate with teams across all sections of the newsroom, executing polished designs to illustrate news stories and creating promotional content to support the website, socials, events and podcasts.
Day to day you will:
- Translate complex financial data, business concepts and statistics into engaging graphics, including: charts, tables, maps, infographics, and timelines
- Produce creative artwork to illustrate stories, including vector and photo illustrations
- Present data in a way that is engaging, easily absorbed, and accurately portrayed
- Execute a range of projects simultaneously across digital and print mediums including website, social media, podcasts, newsletters and daily newspaper edition
- Work effectively with the wider editorial team to ensure graphics are delivered on time and are relevant and effective to the target audience
This position involves shift work that may occur on weekends, public holidays and at night.

QualificationsWhat we would like to see:
- Graphic design qualifications or equivalent
- Demonstrated professional design experience
- A strong portfolio showcasing your designs in a variety of mediums
- Proficiency using Mac OS
- Expertise in Adobe CC
- Intermediate skills in Excel/Google sheets and Acrobat Pro to edit data
- Production experience (print and digital)
- The ability to multitask, prioritise and meet deadlines
- Photo retouching and editing skills
Desirable
- Illustration and animation skills
- Web design and coding skills
- Experience with online data visualisation tools
- Familiarity with cross-channel publishing programs
- Experience using digital image libraries and server systems
- Knowledge of business and finance subject matter would be advantageous
