Great Barrier Reef and access to some of Australia’s pristine tropical coastlines. We are currently recruiting a highly skilled, values driven Hatchery Manager/ Aquaculture Farmer to support our business.

The Hatchery Manager/ Aquaculture Farmer plans, organises, controls, coordinates and performs farming operations to breed and raise prawns and other aquatic stock, including but not limited to:

  • monitoring hatchery performance and ensure processes and governance obligations are maintained across the site
  • planning and coordinating the operation of hatchery operations taking into account environmental and market factors
  • coordinating and overseeing strategies to monitor the environment to maintain optimal growing conditions, minimise the impact of operations on the environment and manage biosecurity and other risks
  • coordinating and overseeing strategies to monitor and maintain the health, welfare and condition of aquatic stock
  • overseeing and undertaking breeding, feeding and nutrition programs
  • overseeing transportation of aquatic stock to new tanks, ponds and pens
  • directing and overseeing general hatchery activities including the provision and maintenance of hatchery infrastructure and equipment
  • organising the purchase and transportation of aquatic stock
  • maintaining and evaluating records of hatchery activities, monitoring market activity and planning production accordingly
  • overseeing data collection and analysis and hatchery technology systems
  • managing business capital including forecasting, planning and budget management
  • selecting, training and supervising staff and contractors
  • actively apply problem solving skills with the ability to achieve strategic, creative, effective and efficient solutions to challenges and changes
  • actively support a culture of sustainability by participating and implementing organisational initiatives
  • providing oversight of, and assistance to, domestication programs and trials
  • leading the hatchery team (including contractors) to ensure optimized performance and efficiencies
  • working with the Maintenance Manager, ensure appropriate maintenance schedules are in place for plant and equipment as deemed necessary by respective specifications and good industry practice

Pacific Reef Fisheries operates a flat organisational structure and as such supervisors and managers are expected to contribute to day-to-day tasking as required. The role requires an individual who can lead from the front and is not scared to “roll up their sleeves” to ensure that production is delivered

About You:Bachelor degree in Aquaculture or relevant discipline

Minimum of 5 years full time relevant experience working knowledge of a prawn/shrimp hatchery

You must hold a current manual drivers licence

Specific experience with Penaeus monodon is preferred but other species such as L Vannamei and F. merguensis or F. indicus are acceptable.Demonstrated progression of management & supervisory roles within an aquaculture setting.Commitment to Safe work practices
