The National Parks Association of NSW (NPA) is looking for an enthusiastic and capable Conservation Projects Officer. NPA is a non-government organisation with supporters across NSW. Our mission is to protect nature through community action. Our conservation work focuses on securing the future of NSW National Parks and other Protected Areas.
The Conservation Projects Officer reports to the Chief Executive Officer and works closely with NPA’s campaigners, regional branches and conservation committees. You will support our projects with strong spatial data (GIS) analysis and mapping, research, assessment and project management skills. You’ll have a passion for improving the status, condition and extent of NSW Protected Areas at a time when nature is under increasing threat.
The role works closely with NPA employees, members and supporters. You’ll liaise with a variety of local, state and national conservation organisations. The role requires the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
This is a part-time role of 3 days / 22.8 hours per week. Working arrangements are flexible, with an office in Pyrmont and options to work from home.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain NPA’s spatial data (GIS) system
- Conduct spatial analysis and mapping of conservation values
- Research and document conservation values, threats and attributes
- Prepare project plans, track and report on project progress
- Liaise with government and non-government conservations organisation on project issues
- Maintain broad knowledge about threats and opportunities relating to NSW Protected Areas and natural landscapes

The Conservation Projects Officer will have sound GIS skills and an enthusiasm to apply their skills to Conservation Projects. They will show attention to detail, initiative and flexibility. Strong interpersonal and communications skills are essential. You must have the ability to build effective working relationships across a dispersed organisation. You will understand and actively support NPA’s mission.
Essential Skills
- Strong skills in spatial data analysis and mapping, preferably including QGIS
- Familiarity with NSW public access data bases relating to vegetation, landforms, fauna, Indigenous heritage, historic heritage, tenure, hazards and zoning
- Tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience in an area relevant to conservation planning, such as natural sciences or cultural heritage
- Sounds skills in project planning and management
- Broad understanding of conservation challenges facing NSW Protected Areas and natural landscapes
- Proactive with a collaborative, positive, can-do approach
- Ability to work under pressure and achieve deadlines
