Job description

Advertised Vacancy Number: IPS/SA893270

This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 3, 2024

Canning College is seeking to appoint a Head of Department (HOD) Science with the experience, capabilities and motivation to lead a team dedicated to the delivery of high-quality teaching and learning sciences programs to international and local students studying pre-university pathway programs.

As HOD Science, the successful candidate will be a key member of the college leadership team. In collaboration with the principal and fellow leadership team members, they will actively develop and promote Canning College’s vision and strategic direction in the college community. They will ideally be an effective instructional leader with the ability to lead an experienced team to develop and deliver quality teaching and learning programs that engage young adult learners and motivate students to succeed with their studies toward university entry.

As HOD the successful applicant will continue to build on the Science learning area’s culture of high-quality teaching and leadership. They should model innovative, solutions-focused, and evidence-based thinking that improves students’ learning outcomes and expands and enriches their college experience.

The successful applicant will ideally display highly effective communication skills and ability to establish and maintain productive partnerships with Canning College’s stakeholder groups and students from a broad range of nationalities and cultural backgrounds. They will be invested in the college goal for international and local students to achieve success on their pathway to leading universities. They will ideally possess high standards of professionalism, display strong interpersonal skills, and value working collaboratively with colleagues and students in Canning College’s unique educational context.

Canning College has been preparing students to achieve entry into Australia’s leading universities since 1982. As a specialist international education institution, it has established a strong reputation for providing overseas students with the personal and academic development and pathways required to succeed in tertiary studies.

In the five years from 2019, the college’s expert staff focused exclusively on providing pathway-to-university programs for international students. In 2024, while continuing its focus on international students, the college resumed the enrolment of local (domestic) students seeking entry to university primarily through WA Certificate of Education  Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) courses.

Flexible entry points into Canning College’s academic pathway programs allow international students to start studying in January, April and mid-year, which gives them the opportunity to enter university degree courses sooner. College staff are experienced in providing the care, support and academic guidance that prepare students for success in their tertiary studies.

Local and international students may enrol in Canning College’s Year 10 program, and Year 11 and Year 12  Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) ATAR programs. International students and eligible local students can also enrol in the Certificate IV in University Access Program, Diploma of Commerce, and the Western Australian Universities’ Foundation Program (WAUFP).

While Canning College has a special relationship with the universities of Perth, college graduates can enrol at all universities across Australia and at many universities across the world. Canning graduates have studied at universities in Australia, England, Ireland, America, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Korea and Singapore.

Canning College students pursue a wide range of degree courses including engineering, medicine, physiotherapy, education, law, pharmacy, nursing and computing.
