About the role

A role has arisen in our Clayton Histology department, the largest Histology department of the ACL network with the highest volume of samples, largest scientific & technical team, and most comprehensive team of pathologists. The role also includes close oversight and engagement with our regional Histology Laboratories in Geelong, Bendigo, and Ballarat.

Working in conjunction with the Laboratory Manager and Supervising Pathologist the role is to provide operational leadership for all Histology services within Victoria and have direct responsibility of the day-to-day operation of Histology within the Clayton facility. This includes grossing, microtomy, staining, and reporting of human and veterinary samples.

Responsibilities are including but not limited to:

  • The leadership, mentoring, and management of 38 staff 
  • Efficient and productive operation of all Histology services, including but not limited to, Frozen Sections, within the state of Victoria. 
  • Developing and achieving departmental KPI’s including but not limited to, head count, FTE, consumable spend, turnaround time, regulatory compliance.
  • Develop/monitor reporting and data analytics for distribution both internally of the department and to management/executive that drive continuous improvement.
  • Develop and implement lean work systems
  • Assist, as required, with budgeting and adherence of Departmental financial and customer service goals 
  • Develop and embed department communication channels to ensure regular and consistent messaging
  • Lead by example to create a patient centered, positive and collaborative culture. 
  • Oversee departmental rostering 
  • Oversee equipment maintenance
  • Oversee supply provision of adequate reagent and consumable supplies
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment 
  • Remaining aware of emerging technologies relevant to Histology and workflow
  • Be at the forefront of emerging technology and development of new and emerging tests within Histology. 
  • Change management within the departments to bring about operational and cultural improvement

Your Profile

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Laboratory Management with strong leadership skills and the ability to be agile and work in a fast-paced environment. 

You will have high levels of problem-solving skills, a willingness to do what it takes to deliver to an outcome and have a strong ethical commitment towards quality. High attention to detail and a drive towards continuous improvement are also prerequisites for this job.

Key competencies include an authentic, honest, and strong work ethic. You will have strong interpersonal; communication and relationship building skills with the ability to consult and provide advice to all levels of the organisation and operate in a collaborative environment. 

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant scientific field.
  • Minimum 10 years post graduate experience in relevant field with deep understanding of Histology including strong bias towards workflow and process improvement.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with a minimum of 5 years relevant leadership experience in a commercial diagnostic pathology laboratory or similar environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in process improvement and project delivery.
  • Preferred post graduate qualification in a relevant field.
  • Preferred, tertiary business, leadership, management, engineering and/or finance qualification.
