Macquarie Community College is one of Sydney’s largest not-for-profit community colleges. A highly regarded place-based adult education provider in continuous operation for more than 70 years, we are a registered training organisation (RTO 90033) with multiple campuses across Sydney, thousands of students and more than 150 staff. We also operate an alternative high school – Gateway Community High.

The HR Specialist role has been created to have a dedicated professional working within the business to focus on continuous improvement for our team members. 

Working closely with the leadership team and our people managers, you will take a lead in ensuring we recruit well, onboard and induct new staff, recognise, reward, challenge and retain them. 

This part-time role is designed to suit an experienced practitioner who is looking for a new role with purpose, lots of variety and flexibility.

Working closely with the Leadership team and as a member of the Corporate Services team, the HR Specialist will develop our people and culture practices, lift our skills and knowledge, manage and run projects to achieve ever higher staff engagement for both Macquarie Community College (MCC) and Gateway Community High (GCH). 

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer the primary responsibilities are:

  • Play a leading role in ensuring our recruitment and onboarding processes are attracting and retaining great talent. 
  • Working to support our people managers, including training for them as managers and for their teams.
  • Work with the senior team to ensure innovative and useful internal connections and communications across the organisation to maintain our incredibly positive culture.
  • Supporting, developing and monitoring staff-related policies, processes and practices that are compliant with our legal, regulatory and funding requirements.
  • Generating accurate and compliant employment contracts.
  • Working with the leadership team to ensure our organisation is ready for ongoing growth.
  • Lead the organisation’s effective and full utilisation of Employment Hero HRIS
  • Provide informed recommendations on HR related issues including our use of awards, training and professional development, employee engagement.

Skills and Experience

  • Would suit an experienced HR person with practical, generalist experience
  • Some knowledge of the interpretation and use of Awards
  • Understands how to make the most of HRIS software and is tech savvy
  • Able to develop recommendations for, and work, with the leadership team
  • Track record of supporting and developing managers and supervisors to be strong people leaders 
  • Highly desirable to have worked in the education sector – preferably across VET, ACE and schools
  • A natural multi-tasker who is also a completer-finisher and enjoys variety
  • A strong individual performer who is also a great team player

  • Hold qualifications in Human Resources or relevant field

and have technical skills and experience with:

  • HRIS
  • Microsoft suite including Excel and Teams
  • Staff training tools and resources, including in house Learning Management systems
  • Visual and internal communication principles
  • Hold a current NSW drivers licence with a good driving record
  • Can provide a current Working with Children’s check 
  • Can provide a current National Police Check
