NSW Ambulance
Intensive Care Paramedic (Training) - Statewide
This opportunity is for training and permanent appointment to Intensive Care Paramedic (ICP) positions statewide. Training and posting opportunities will be subject to existing vacancies and demand. Paramedics, covered by the and who meet all the criteria and conditions detailed below, are invited to submit an expression of interest to undertake the Intensive Care Paramedic (ICP) selection process for training opportunities within NSW.

Prerequisites
  • Registration, checks and license: Applicants must hold and maintain as current their AHPRA Registration, verified WWCC, NSW Light Rigid Driver’s License, and be credentialed by NSW Ambulance to a minimum clinical level of P1.
  • Work experience: Applicants must have completed a minimum of one (1) year full-time, or part-time equivalent, excluding overtime hours, as a qualified P1 with NSW Ambulance (or like-minded statutory Ambulance Service and have been credentialed by NSW Ambulance) by the closing date for applications.
  • Applicants must have demonstrated recency of practice, i.e.: completed most recent CPD and at least one complete full-time roster on road prior to course commencement.
  • Applicants serving a consolidation period must have completed their consolidation, in its entirety, prior to ICP course commencement.
  • Employment conditions: Successful applicants will relinquish their substantive position and be permanently appointed to a Category A location as a Paramedic Specialist upon successful completion of ICP training. A two year ICP consolidation period must be served following completion of ICP training,
  • Rate of pay: Successful applicants will be paid at their current substantive rate of pay during ICP training. Upon successful completion of the didactic and clinical hospital placement components of ICP training, from the first day on road, salary will be adjusted to Paramedic Specialist, Year 1.
  • Right of return: Upon acceptance of ICP training, employees will relinquish their substantive position. The exception is where ICP training is not successfully completed, an applicant will be returned to their previous substantive position.
  • Hours of work: This is a permanent full-time employment opportunity. (A part time employee who accepts the position will have their employment status changed to full-time. Flexible workplace opportunities for the consolidation period may be available post qualification, as per applicable policy, however, two years full-time equivalent must be completed at a Category A location.)
  • Performance and conduct checks: Appointment to this position is subject to satisfactory performance and conduct checks. This includes references from two (2) direct line managers; National Police & Service Register checks; vaccination record and leave reviews; PDP status; and clearances from Work Cover / Recovery (ability to undertake full duties of the position) and Professional Conduct & Integrity Unit.

  • Assessments include online cognitive ability assessments and a series of multiple mini-interviews with a range of assessors.
  • Please note: all interviews will be conducted via Microsoft Teams. You will need to be prepared – in a suitable location, have a computer with working camera and microphone, connected to reliable internet.
  • Applications are an expression of interest and applicants are agreeing to report to the locations nominated by NSW Ambulance for their training period.
  • An eligibility list, ranked in meritorious order, will be created to fill ICP training opportunities arising for up to 18 months.
General information
  • The training course may be suspended or relocated without notice, even after it has commenced, and/or staff returned to normal operational rosters.
  • ICP training consists of:
  • Didactic Components – 2 x 4-week blocks, State Operations Centre, Homebush (or other location to be advised).
  • Hospital placement – 5 weeks, various locations throughout NSW (subject to demand and availability), confirmed during didactic component.
  • On-road training / assessment – 14 weeks (unless extended) at designated statewide ambulance stations.

As leaders, ICPs should actively foster a workplace environment free from bullying and harassment, maintaining respectable and acceptable behaviour at all times. ICPs collaborate with colleagues and seek support from managers in a collective effort to address and mitigate unacceptable behaviour and the impact of bullying, harassment and victimisation within the workplace. ICPs should express concerns and seek resolution for any instances or perceptions of bullying as early as possible.
