An exciting opportunity exists to join a well-established and actively growing veterinary diagnostics laboratory offering veterinary pathology services in Perth. Our designated laboratory in Bayswater is located within 1km of Bayswater and Ashfield train stations and is adjacent to Tonkin Highway and Guildford Road.
About the position:
We are seeking a multidisciplinary Laboratory Scientist. Desired criteria for this position is familiarity with haematology and biochemistry analysers, the ability to review blood smears confidently and accurately, competency in microbiology (including plate reading, susceptibility testing, etc). Some competency in serology, and endocrinology is required.
Essential skills (consideration will only be given to applicants with these):
- Be able to confidently and accurate assess blood films, including red cell morphology, leukocyte morphology, leukocyte differential cell counts, assessment of platelet number and morphology
- Be able to critically evaluate haematology results for validation
- Handling and processing veterinary specimens for general laboratory diagnostic testing, including haematology, biochemistry, serology, endocrinology, microbiology (including plate reading), and urine/ faecal analyses
- Ability to keep accurate records and generate reports
- Organise and prepare appropriate samples for external laboratory testing
- Handling and processing of samples for microbiological testing (bacterial and fungal), plate reading, interpretation of susceptibility testing.
- Urine wet microscopy and culture
Highly desired skills include:
- The ability to work well within a small team
- Excellent communication and record keeping skills
- Excellent organisational skills (i.e., stocktake, ordering)
- Able to work efficiently and without supervision
- A willingness to up-skill in other areas of diagnostic pathology where needed (biochemistry, haematology, endocrinology)
- Solid computer and accurate data entry skills
- Experience with evaluating blood films from veterinary species is desired but not essential
