Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is a global leader in conservation, providing hope for Australia’s wildlife with a science-informed, Land Management partnership approach which delivers high impact results. AWC's mission - to deliver effective conservation for all native animal species and their habitats - is achieved by:
- Operations - delivering effective large-scale Land Management including fire management, feral animal control, weed control and infrastructure management.
- Science - delivering the largest national biological survey program with a focus on measuring the population of indicator species and the extent of threatening processes as well as conducting research on key issues such as feral cat control.
- Fundraising - mobilising finance (primarily, tax deductible donations) from the general public and philanthropists including through effective communication of field updates from around the AWC estate.
Three of AWC’s sanctuaries are in the Kimberley region: Mornington, Marion Downs, and Charnley-River, along with four partnerships, the Dambimangari, Wilinggin, and Yulmbu Aboriginal Corporations, and the Commonwealth Department of Defence controlled Yampi Sound Training Area. In total, these sanctuaries and partnerships cover a combined area of over 4.3 million ha and protect numerous threatened habitats and species.
About the role:
Reporting to the Sanctuary Manager - Mornington, the Land Management Officer assists in the implementation of a range of conservation Land Management programs (fire management including prescribed burning and wildfire suppression, feral animal control and weed management).
To be successful in this role you will have to have practical hands-on skills and a love for physical outdoor work. We are looking for people who can demonstrate some of the following skills and experiences:
- Demonstrated practical skills in relation to asset and infrastructure repair and maintenance including skills relevant to:
- General building maintenance and fencing.
- Implementation of an asset and infrastructure maintenance programs.
- Ability to use a range of plant and equipment and carry out routine mechanical repairs to:
- 4WD’s, ATV’s, tractors.
- Generators, pumps etc – any experience with solar power systems highly regarded
- Power tools including chainsaws, welders, and electrical tools.
- Fire-fighting and weed spraying equipment.
- The ability to improvise and find practical solutions with limited resources.
- Experience living and working in remote areas and a willingness to spend extended periods in the field.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills across a wide range of groups including neighbouring landholders, scientists, traditional owners, volunteers, contractors and visitors is essential.
- Demonstrated capability to work alone or equally able to work as part of a small team.
- The ability to organise, co-ordinate, prioritise and execute a number of tasks in an efficient manner.
- Ability to use standard business software packages including Word, Excel, and email.
- An interest in nature conservation

Qualifications:
- A qualification (TAFE certificate or university degree) in Conservation and Land Management will be advantageous but is not essential.
- A qualification or practical experience in a range of trades (building, mechanical, fencing, plumbing, welding, steel fabrication & electrical) is also advantageous.
Licenses, Certificates and/or Training:
- A valid manual driver’s licence (essential), with experience operating agricultural machinery such as trucks and tractors (desirable).
- First aid certificate, preferably senior/remote.
- Firearms experience is desirable, including the ability to obtain a Western Australian firearms license.

This role is offered as a short-term 9-month opportunity (April to December) and is based at Mornington Wildlife Sanctuary which is situated on the Gibb River Road (approx 5 hours from Derby).
