About the Legal Counsel role
The AFLPA’s work is dynamic and challenging as the AFL industry continues to change and evolve. The Legal team helps to advance and protect the interests of AFL and AFLW players at work, both individually and collectively.
To be successful in the role, the Legal Counsel will need to be able to provide timely, accurate and practical legal advice taking into account various stakeholders within the AFL industry. The candidate must be able to demonstrate 2-4 years’ legal experience either in private legal practice or in-house roles, have outstanding drafting and communication skills, be highly motivated and be excited to work as a player advocate in Australian rules football.
Practical experience in the areas of corporate governance, privacy, business operational and regulatory matters is not essential but will be highly regarded.
About you
You are an early career lawyer who is passionate about the future of Australian rules football and the role of AFL and AFLW players. You understand the importance of collective and individual representation and want to ensure players’ rights are upheld and advanced.
You have technical and practical competencies as follows:
- Current legal practicing certificate applying to Victoria
- Strong legal drafting, contract review and legal research skills
- Practical problem-solving skills and ability to work through issues to achieve the best outcome for AFLPA members
- Well-developed communication skills, including being able to distill complex legal concepts for stakeholders including AFLPA members
- Understanding of key issues impacting the current and future environment of Australian rules football, both legal and otherwise
- Strong project management skills, including ability to manage multiple stakeholders, deadlines, priorities and desired outcomes
- Experience in corporate governance, privacy, business operational and regulatory space highly regarded
