The Legal Officer- Child Advocate reports to the Senior Legal Officer- Child Advocate – Children and Young People Team.
The purpose of theLegal Officer - Child Advocate is to:
- Perform the child advocacy functions as delegated by the Public Guardian for a child/young person in the child protection system in accordance with the Public Guardian Act 2014. The holders of this position will be appointed as a Child Advocate officer in accordance with the Public Guardian Act 2014; and
- Provide advice and assistance to the Manager, in relation to the discharge of the Public Guardian’s statutory function and exercise of their statutory powers particularly in relation to child advocacy.

Key responsibilities
- Perform child advocacy functions, for children and young people in the child protection system, in areas of law such as child protection, youth justice, education, human rights and administrative law. • Create and maintain records, including client records in accordance with the Public Records Act 2002 that support child advocacy functions and performance reporting.
- Build and sustain positive relationships with team members.
- Support other team members in the performance of their role and functions as required.
- Actively engage, build rapport and foster collaborative relationships with relevant internal/external stakeholders.
- Undertake research and provide advice to the Manager on issues of law, policy and practice relating to the rights and interests of children and young people in the child protection system.
- A degree in law from a recognised tertiary institution and ability to be immediately admitted as a barrister or solicitor is required to perform this role.
- While not mandatory, preference will be given to applicants with a minimum of 12 months post admission professional experience in relevant areas of law.
- Possession of a C class driver's license is a mandatory requirement for this role role as travel is required to attend court, meetings, and visits in a range of locations that are often not accessible by alternative means.
- As this role involves child-related duties or is within a centre where child-related duties occur, as defined under section 57 of the Public Sector Act 2022, possession of a blue card is a mandatory requirement for this role.
