Job description

We have a great opportunity for a dedicated and committed professional to join ASC, supporting our LGBTQI+ peer group of people seeking asylum. Working with your colleagues across the broader Community Engagement team, this role requires you to bring all of your energy, passion and empathy to work in direct support for people seeking asylum.
 
This is a part-time position, working 1 day per week based in Newtown on a fixed term contract of up to 4 months (with the possibility of extending further).
 
THE ROLE
 
We are looking for a dynamic communicator and group facilitator who can support ASC’s LGBTIQ+ Peer Support Group. 
 
This role will work closely with the Community Engagement Manager to organise and facilitate LGBTIQ+ community group events, connect group members to services and opportunities, and facilitate consultation sessions with group members to identify projects for co-design. 
 
The LGBTIQ+ Community Coordinator will work collaboratively with the Community Engagement team and others across ASC, as well as the wider sector to develop and foster opportunities for support, connection and advocacy in line with the group's purpose and ASC's strategic plan. 
 
THE PERSON
 
The ideal person for this role will have strong interpersonal and facilitation skills, particularly in working with people from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. You will have a deep understanding of, and respect for, LGBTIQ+ communities and human rights. You work with a trauma-informed, culturally respectful, and strengths-based approach. You are flexible, adaptive, and use creativity to problem solve complex situations. 
You would have a minimum 2 years of professional experience working within the LGBTIQ+ sector, a strong understanding of issues that affect people seeking asylum, and a commitment to developing this knowledge. 
 
Selection Criteria
 
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following: 
 
Essential

  • Strong interpersonal and facilitation skills, particularly with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Familiarity with local LGBTIQ+ communities 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers 
  • Experience fostering people’s strengths and utilising existing skills and knowledge
  • A strong understanding of issues that affect people seeking asylum, and commitment to undertaking training to maintain and develop this knowledge 
  • Ability to adhere to policies in relation to code of conduct, boundaries and confidentiality
  • Intermediate level of proficiency in working with IT systems, databases, and record keeping. Experience with Google systems is favourable
  • Ability to maintain organisational knowledge by accessing relevant documentation as available
  • Availability to attend activities after-hours and weekends, on occasion
Desirable
  • Lived experience of seeking asylum or being a refugee, particularly within the LGBTQIA+ community is highly valued.
  • Experience working in a community services environment
  • Experience to create and foster external relationships with current and potential stakeholders
  • Proficiency in other languages is an advantage. 
  • NSW Driver’s Licence
