We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Policy Officer to collaborate with the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and local government to drive implementation of a sustainable, safe, and affordable waste reduction and resource recovery strategy for NSW. This role involves supporting local government to implement the NSW Government’s Waste and Sustainable Materials (WaSM) Strategy 2041: Stage 1 2021 – 2027 and NSW Plastics Action Plan.
About LGNSW
Local Government NSW (LGNSW) is the peak body for councils and related organisations in our State. LGNSW advocates on behalf of members and their communities on policy to decision makers at state and federal levels. We also provide a comprehensive range of services including industrial relations representation, management services and training.
About the role
Reporting to the Strategy Manager, Environment, the Senior Policy Officer will join the Environment team within the Advocacy Division. The role involves:
- Providing advice and reports to the EPA and LGNSW in relation to Local Government’s needs, to inform transition pathways and implementation of the WaSM Strategy including the transition to a circular economy.
- Developing and delivering education and engagement to Local Government to meet EPA and Local Government needs e.g., via case studies, workshops, guidance material, coaching, newsletters, surveys.
- Representing Local Government on Technical Review Panels for WaSM grant programs and waste-related advisory committees and working groups where the officer expertise aligns.
- Identifying risks and mitigation measures that support implementation of the WaSM Strategy
- Developing an annual project plan in collaboration with EPA and LGNSW and tracking and reporting on progress to LGNSW and EPA.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have in-depth knowledge of the Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy, NSW waste legislation, and general knowledge of council waste and recycling practices and policies. You will have well-refined verbal and written communication skills including the ability to network within local government and the waste industry, as well as knowledge of project design, implementation, and evaluation. You will be positive, results-driven and understand the key role of policy in a member organisation.
Essential Requirements
- Demonstrated experience in and/or understanding of Local Government legislation, policy and practice in waste management and the transition of NSW to a circular economy.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the role of NSW and Local Government, particularly in relation to waste management and the circular economy.
- Demonstrated ability to negotiate and collaborate towards shared outcomes across diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated advanced written and oral communication skills with the ability to develop strong networks in the waste industry.
- Excellent skills and experience in consultation, facilitation, and capacity building.
- Demonstrated experience in project design, implementation, and evaluation.
- Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and flexibility to meet changing priorities.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications.
