This is a permanent part-time (0.6FTE) position commencing Term 2, 2024

Newborough Primary School (PS) is an Independent Public School providing excellence in educational opportunities from Kindergarten to Year 6. Located in Karrinyup, Newborough PS is a contemporary school engaged in best practice teaching pedagogy and is seeking a motivated and dynamic Library Officer to join their friendly team.

The successful applicant will develop and support the day-to-day operations of the library, providing and maintaining up-to-date reference, information and associated services to teaching staff and students. They will ideally have a love of books, be able to inspire students with a love of reading and successfully create a welcoming atmosphere in the library. They will ideally have good organisational skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with their Line Manager, Administration Team and/or teachers and the community to promote reading. Ideally, the successful applicant should be able to prioritise work to meet deadlines, be approachable, work cooperatively in a team, work pro-actively and independently as required and use technology competently to improve the effectiveness of the library.

Working collaboratively with staff and responding to the cultures, interests and needs of students, the successful applicant should prepare stimulating and topical library displays to provide a vibrant and welcoming learning environment, connect purchasing with curriculum initiatives that meet the focus areas outlined in the school’s Business Plan and engage the community in school-based literacy event, where relevant. Knowledge of how to run and manage a budget, including the purchasing and stocktake of relevant stock and required licenses, is highly regarded. Capacity to use library software, ‘SmartSuite’, and an interest in exploring its full capacity, is highly desirable.

The successful applicant should also conduct library skills training for staff and display the effective use of library systems and equipment. The Library Officer is responsible for trouble-shooting any issues with library equipment, including the photocopiers, computers and/or other non IT-related equipment.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • good verbal and written communication skills, including application of customer service principles and practices.
  • good interpersonal skills and ability to work unsupervised and in a team environment.
  • ability to use computers and a range of application software packages, particularly databases, spread sheets and word processing.
  • experience in providing administrative support with the ability to organise and prioritise tasks effectively

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
