The Coordinator role will work closely with the
Life Sciences Manager to support the Tasmanian Devil and Alpine Skink programs, the Platypus, Tasmanian Devil and Reptile visitor experiences, and the Zoos Victoria Detection Dog program. The Coordinator will be responsible for the supervision of keeping staff, maintaining relevant assets, ensuring a high standard of health and welfare for wildlife in our care and performing animal husbandry duties. The Coordinator will work with the
Life Sciences Manager to achieve captive breeding targets for threatened species programs. The Coordinator will have the commitment and ability to supervise and mentor staff, manage teams and promote positive team culture.
Selection criteriaQualifications- Certificate III in Captive Animals
- Tertiary qualification in biology or conservation discipline (highly desirable)
Experience- Experience in husbandry and conservation breeding programs for native mammals and reptiles
- Proven working knowledge of biosecurity management
- Proven ability to develop and implement goals and projects that define key expectations for staff according to timelines
- Proven ability to train, foster and develop staff expertise in specific taxonomic and research disciplines.
- Proven ability to implement effective work practices that adhere to safe work standards and other relevant legislative requirements.
- Experience in breeding and raising captive animals, while maintaining positive animal welfare states.
- Coordinating an integrated approach to deliver successful recovery programs.
- Demonstrated ability to problem solve and implement improvements to captive breeding programs to meet recovery targets
- Proven ability to develop and implement behavioral management strategies to maintain positive animal welfare states
Skills & Knowledge- Developing and implementing enrichment, training/conditioning and visitor interaction programs.
- Proven ability to influence others to accept and implement new initiatives.
- The ability to work in collaboration with teams.
- Proven ability to act as a liaison across a broad range of internal and external stakeholders using excellent written and oral communication skills
- Proven ability to take accountability for implementing husbandry techniques that may be unproven.
- Proficient in software such as Microsoft Word and Excel, ZIMS, and SPARKS.
- Knowledge of ZV Research programs and research processes
- Understanding biodiversity conservation and knowledge of best practice field research techniques.
- Demonstrated experience writing formal reports for internal and external stakeholders
