Job description

Location: Melbourne/Morwell

Job Type: Full Time / on-going

Organisation: SEC
  • Become part of the solution to climate change, accelerating Victoria’s renewable energy transition.
  • Join a ‘for purpose’ government-owned energy company that empowers its people to make a difference.
  • Enjoy competitive pay and flexible work/life balance.
Do work that makes a difference

More action is needed to reduce emissions and manage climate change. At the SEC, we are building an enterprising and dynamic team to accelerate Victoria’s transition to renewables and help achieve Victoria’s renewable energy target of 95% by 2035.

We are working together for renewable, affordable reliable energy for all Victorians.

Your role

As the Market Operations Lead at the SEC, you will oversee and enhance the operations within our renewable energy markets. The ideal candidate will be responsible for leading a function focused on optimizing Market Operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and driving the company's strategic objectives, including managing the bidding and dispatch of a portfolio of wind, solar and BESS projects, preferably involving the use of ‘auto-bidder’ software solutions. This role demands a blend of technical expertise and leadership skills, and over time will involve building and leading a high-performance team that will own and manage the SEC’s physical market strategy and day-to-day physical (spot) Market Operations

The role will include implementing outsource partner relationships, integrating them into the SEC’s operating model, and working with technology vendors as a product owner to ensure the SECs chosen technology applications are implemented, enabling seamless and compliant service delivery.

This role can be based in either our Melbourne CBD office or our regional office located in Morwell.

What you will do:

  • Support the selection and implementation of an automated bidding system and ETRM.
  • Develop an operating model for 24/7 oversight of the physical trading function, including risk management, market compliance, and transaction verification.
  • Maintain relationships with key industry stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, market operators, metering service providers and other energy sector entities.
  • Oversee the analysis of market data to identify trends, evaluate performance metrics, and prepare detailed reports on Market Operations. Utilize data insights to propose actionable strategies for enhancing operational efficiency and profitability.
  • Lead the registration application processes for the company’s portfolio of generation and storage assets and ensure all Market Operations are compliant to regulations.

Who you are:
Your capabilities and areas of expertise that matter most for this role are:
  • Demonstrable experience working end to end across physical energy market operational processes in the NEM, including understanding of bidding and dispatch of scheduled and semi-scheduled generators, regional price dynamics, constraint equations and network outages.
  • Experience leading operational teams: Greater than 5-years experience in an operational leadership role including experience working with outsource partners to deliver against operational performance targets.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners to collaborate and work in an agile and ever-changing start-up environment.
  • Unwavering customer focus, striving for continuous improvement, and demonstrating a proactive can-do, attitude in what is a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, a proactive and structured approach to identifying and resolving problems for SEC and for our customers.

Highly Desirable:
  • Greater than 5 years working for an Australian Energy Generator with at least 3 years relevant experience with renewable energy and/or energy storage technologies.
  • Agile project delivery experience ideally as a product owner, project manager or business owner.
  • A detailed level of understanding and knowledge of automated electricity trading technology platforms.
  • Experience identifying, scoping and delivering process optimisation opportunities including articulation of business case for change.
  • Strong understanding of AEMO procedures and the Victorian regulatory landscape.

Our empowered workforce
A career with us means you’ll be joining a new and vibrant ‘for purpose’ government-owned renewable energy company that:
  • Empowers you to influence how we accelerate Victoria’s renewable energy transition and decarbonise our economy.
  • Inspires you through meaningful, challenging work in an environment that encourages leadership and an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Supports your growth through career advancement and professional development opportunities.
  • Provides hybrid work arrangements, with around 3 days working in Melbourne or Morwell, with flexible work options to meet individual circumstances, providing greater choice and autonomy.

About us
We have an exciting and ambitious road ahead with a focus on:

  • Investing in renewable energy and storage projects that accelerate the transition and deliver commercial returns.
  • Supporting households to go all electric to reduce their emissions and energy bills.
  • Building the renewable energy workforce our energy transition requires.

We’re partnering with industry to transform the energy sector, opening the state up for further innovation and investments in renewables. This includes an initial $1 billion towards delivering 4.5 gigawatts of power through renewable energy and storage projects – the equivalent replacement capacity of coal-fired power station Loy Yang A, which is set to close in 2035.

We will also play an important role in helping Victorian households to reduce their energy bills and emissions by offering simple and effective solutions to help them switch to electric.

The energy transformation will create thousands of jobs. The SEC will play a role in attracting and training our future renewable energy workforce, including through the SEC Centre of Training Excellence.

We provide a platform for growth, encouraging you to bring your whole self to your role. However, you identify and whatever your background, please apply if this is a role that excites you.
