The Branch is a dynamic, fast-paced and friendly place to work. Media Advisers are responsible for providing strategic media and issues management advice to a wide range of areas in the department. Our core business includes providing timely and appropriate responses to media enquiries, producing high-quality media materials and overseeing media monitoring.You will provide media support for major Prime Ministerial events, including overseas travel and incoming Guest of Government visits, State Funerals and other events. You will operate as part of a broader team reporting to the Director, Public Affairs and Media. The role also works in partnership with areas across the department on media and communications strategies for their projects. The role requires occasion travel and participation in an on-call roster. We value team members who can think strategically, work across a number of issues and projects, and deliver outcomes to deadlines. They will bring a keen interest in public policy and experience in media, public relations or strategic communications. We welcome candidates with backgrounds in government, private or not-for-profit who are interested in applying their skills to a diverse range of policy areas. We are looking for people who are comfortable with uncertainty and complexity, and who can liaise comfortably with stakeholders at all levels to deliver projects on time and to a high standard.You will have:
  • strong written and verbal communication skills
  • excellent judgement and good people skills
  • experience in issues management and media liaison
  • a keen interest in current affairs and the policies and programs of the Australian Government
  • the ability to be flexible and respond constructively to tight deadlines, change and uncertainty
  • strong project management, organisational and planning skills – including excellent attention to detail
  • a willingness to travel and participate in an out of hours and weekend roster, when required.
Desirable experience includes:
  • working as a journalist
  • managing events and logistics
  • experience in foreign affairs or working with international delegations.
